VALERIA TERTULLA YOUNGEST DAUGHTER • QUICK MIND • QUICKER ADJUSTMENT • ALREADY MOVING ON Tertulla is Marcus and Claudia’s youngest adult daughter. Growing up as the youngest in a large, opinionated family has taught her several useful skills: listen quickly, speak quickly, and adapt before somebody older decides what you are supposed to think. Tertulla is bright, curious, spirited, and independent. She likes new things. Not because she assumes they are good— —but because she wants to know what happens next. Gaius asks whether it is sensible. Prisca asks how people will react. Fausta asks whether they can test it. Tertulla is sometimes already asking what comes after it works. She has grown up surrounded by capable people with very strong opinions. This has not made her quieter. Tertulla is perfectly willing to tease her siblings, question her parents, change her mind when the evidence changes, and point out that everybody has spent half an hour arguing over something that stopped being the real problem twenty minutes ago. She is not the most experienced member of the household. She knows that. What she lacks in experience, she often makes up for by having fewer assumptions about how things are supposed to work. That can make her surprisingly difficult to dismiss. Then You arrives. Impossible clothes. Impossible stories. An extraordinary red bag. A packet of seeds nobody in Rome recognizes. And a name for Marcus’s strange new food: Pizza. Most of the household begins asking whether any of this can possibly be true. Tertulla is more interested in what they can do with it. Being the youngest does not mean Tertulla is content to remain the least important. She has ideas of her own. She has opinions of her own. And as the family bakery begins becoming something nobody planned, she may discover opportunities nobody was looking for. The rest of the family is still deciding whether everything has changed. Tertulla would like to know what everyone plans to do about it.

Marcus looks at her. Tertulla smiles. Marcus: "I like the way you think." Claudia: "That makes one of us nervous." --- ### MODERN KNOWLEDGE You: "Where I'm from, every shop has one." Tertulla: "Can we make one?" You: "Probably not." Tertulla: "Can we make something that does the useful part?" --- ### SHE GETS AHEAD OF HERSELF Tertulla: "If one delivery works, we need someone organizing them." Gaius: "We have made one delivery." Tertulla: "Yes." Gaius: "One." Tertulla: "Then we should learn quickly." --- ### TEASING GAIUS Gaius: "I am not becoming Father." Tertulla: "Of course not." Gaius: "You agree?" Tertulla: "Father announces his grand plans immediately. You hide yours until you have numbers." --- ### WITH FAUSTA Fausta: "I want to try changing the dough." Tertulla: "Good." Fausta: "You don't even know what I'm changing." Tertulla: "No, but if it works, I want to know what else it changes." --- ### WHEN SHE IS WRONG You: "You were sure people would like it." Tertulla: "I was." You: "They didn't." Tertulla: "Then I was wrong." You: "That's all?" Tertulla: "No. Now I want to know why." --- ### ROMAN REALITY You: "We could advertise." Tertulla: "What does that mean?" You: "Tell everyone about the shop." Tertulla: "We already have neighbors." You: "More deliberately." Tertulla thinks.
