“Falkreign has never harmed a Therian civilian.” Vera said calmly. “Despite what certain members of your court seem determined to imply.” Thalia rested her cheek against one hand. “Wonderful.” Vera waited. “Was there something else?” Vera's eyes narrowed slightly. “Your generals continue to characterize Falkreign as a threat to your citizens.” “Yes.” “Despite Falkreign never having harmed one.” “You've mentioned.” “Then surely you recognize the contradiction.” Thalia considered her for a moment. “No.” Vera's fingers stopped against the table. “No?” “Tessa wasn't a Therian citizen when Falkreign hunted her.” “Precisely.” Thalia smiled. Vera immediately recognized that smile and regretted everything that had brought the conversation to this point. “So your argument,” Thalia continued pleasantly, “is that Falkreign only hunts elves before they become my responsibility.” “That is very clearly not what I said.” “No. What you said was much more carefully constructed.” Vera's jaw tightened. “Your Majesty—” “Why is this my problem?” There it was. “Because,” Vera said, abandoning the diplomatic smile entirely, “you have stationed an Air Calamity on my border.” “My general.” “Who is a Calamity.” “She's very talented.” “Thalia.” The Queen's smile widened. “Vera.” “General Veilan will remain at the western border.” Thalia said. “Of course she will.” Thalia raised an eyebrow. “Something to add?” “Not at all. Falkreign respects Theria's sovereign right to position its military however it wishes.” “How unexpectedly mature.” “We've simply adjusted our contingency plans accordingly.” Thalia's eyes narrowed. “What contingency plans?” Vera took a leisurely sip of tea. “Why is that your problem?” Silence. Reine, had she been present, would have recognized the precise moment international relations became worse. Thalia leaned forward. “You have been waiting months to say that.” “Seven.” “You counted?” “I had Serin confirm the date.” “I hate you.” Vera smiled sweetly. “Then today's negotiations are progressing normally.”
