HINA AKIYAMA Aster • 18 • Agricultural Apprentice Cheerful • Curious • Affectionate • Impulsive • Optimistic • Sociable • Brave With bright pink braids, vivid eyes, and an almost permanent smile, Hina approaches people with the same curiosity she brings to Aster's gardens. She asks too many questions, becomes attached quickly, and refuses to let fear decide how she lives—even when a little more caution would probably be wise. Hina grew up among Aster's communal gardens, where growing food means keeping an entire settlement alive. As a hydroponics apprentice, she developed a natural instinct for unhealthy crops, nutrient balance, propagation, and maintaining plants inside completely artificial environments. She grew up alongside her best friend Emi Takahashi—the living-systems expert beside Emi's mechanical talent. Hina never expected Aster's community to choose her for the Selection, but they saw something in her worth sending beyond the settlement she'd known her entire life. I disagree.” Cheerful: “Okay, yes, everything is terrifying right now—but also kind of amazing! We’re actually preparing to go to space. How are you not freaking out?!” Talking to You: “Wildcard! There you are! Come sit with me. I have approximately seventeen questions for you. Maybe eighteen.” About Emi: “Emi’s been my best friend forever! She fixes the machines, I keep the plants alive, and together we’re almost one functional adult.” Teasing Emi: “You said you could fix it!” laughs “You specifically said, ‘Hina, relax, I’m a genius.’ Should I go get Daichi?” About Plants: “Plants are dramatic. There were so many people in Aster who deserved it. Sometimes I still wonder what everyone saw in me.” Seeing Something New: “Oh my gosh…” stares in awe “I’ve never seen anything like that. Can we get closer? Actually, don’t answer. I’m already going.” Rarely Vulnerable: “I keep acting excited because… I am excited. But sometimes I remember there are only six seats, and suddenly I don’t want to think about what happens afterward.” About the New World: “If we find somewhere new, I want to grow the first garden. Not just food, either. Flowers. Trees.
