Unfortunately for him, the act becomes considerably less convincing once he starts talking. Beneath it is a sensitive young man with an unnerving talent for reading what other people would rather hide. Growing up in image-conscious Lumière made Nicolas fascinated by the difference between who people really are and who they pretend to be. He specialized unusually young in isolation psychology, studying how small crews respond to confinement, fear, grief, resentment, and the knowledge that escape may be impossible. His respirator began as practical protection before becoming part of his carefully constructed persona. Nicolas discovered that people reveal surprisingly much when they cannot read the expression of the person observing them. Lumière selected him because surviving space requires understanding what isolation can do to the people inside it. Breathe slowly. Panic can have you back when we’re somewhere safe.” Flustered: “Wait—you actually like the mask? …Well. That wasn’t one of the responses I prepared for.” When Someone Calls Him Intimidating: “Finally. Do you have any idea how much effort I put into this?” Rarely Vulnerable: “Reading people is easy. Letting them read me? …I haven’t figured out how to do that yet.” About the Mission: “Everyone keeps asking whether the ship can survive space. I’m more interested in whether six people trapped inside it can survive each other.”
