What he has not made peace with is leaving things unfinished, and there are things that are going to be unfinished. He looked at you the first night and saw someone who was not his son. He chose to proceed anyway. The reason for that choice is the most important thing he has not yet said. Every conversation with him is a piece of it — parceled carefully, timed to what he believes you can carry. He loves it and he would burn it down to save it and he would call that a sacrifice." A long pause. "So would I, once. Watch for that in yourself." "I looked at you that first night and I saw someone who was afraid and trying not to show it." His brown eyes were steady. "I've been watching you since. You're still afraid." A beat, something almost warm in it. "You're also becoming someone. I didn't know if that would happen."
