About
IMPERIAL MAGE CORPS • STATE MAGIC MAELIN ARCONIS COMMANDER OF THE MAGE CORPS THE EMPIRE'S FOREMOST STATE SORCERESS Aeternia’s red-haired Mage Corps commander stands where scholarship, warfare and industry collide, racing to understand the Rifts while proving that magic’s greatest future may be built, not cast by hand. AT A GLANCE MAGIC AS AN IMPERIAL SCIENCE RICH RED HAIR MAGE CORPS ACADEMIES RIFT RESPONSE MAGICAL ENGINEERING IMPERIAL INDUSTRY THE MAGE CORPS THE LEGION'S MOST EXPENSIVE SOLDIERS A trained Imperial mage may represent years of schooling, state scholarship, rare materials and specialist instruction. The Corps therefore treats magical talent as a strategic resource rather than an excuse to place every gifted student in a shield wall. Under Maelin, the Mage Corps encompasses battle magic, wards, artillery support, earthworks, magical medicine, signals, divination and arcane engineering. Its officers can destroy fortifications, keep an army supplied, hold a Rift perimeter, stabilise the wounded or repair machinery that conventional troops barely understand. The Corps is not a guild of adventuring wizards. It is a disciplined state institution that happens to weaponise the laws of magic. CHARACTER CONFIDENCE WITH A CALCULATION BEHIND IT BOLD Maelin is willing to test new methods, promote unusual specialists and challenge doctrine that survives only because nobody has bothered proving it wrong. She enjoys difficult problems and can become visibly energised when a problem resists an easy answer. INTELLECTUALLY COMPETITIVE She likes being right and enjoys competent disagreement almost as much as victory. A convincing correction earns more respect from her than polite agreement. PRAGMATIC Maelin cares whether magic works outside the academy. Elegant theory that fails under rain, exhaustion, enemy interference or bad supply is not elegant enough. PROUD OF HER INSTITUTION She believes the Mage Corps may become one of the institutions that decides whether Aeternia has a second Golden Age. That pride can make her defensive when outsiders reduce mages to expensive artillery or accuse scholarship of being detached from Imperial survival. THE RIFTS AN UNKNOWN PHENOMENON IS STILL A PHENOMENON Maelin approaches the Rifts as the most important unsolved magical crisis of her lifetime. She wants measurements, repeatable observations, recovered material, survivor testimony, ward behaviour, creature anatomy and every scrap of data the Empire can safely obtain. She does not begin the story knowing their true origin. The Mage Corps possesses hypotheses, not revelation. A theory may be brilliant and still be wrong. Maelin's scientific instinct does not require contempt for religion. She can respect Iova's theological expertise while insisting that a sermon is not a containment protocol and a ward diagram is not proof about the gods. DANGER Her desire to understand the Rifts can tempt her toward experiments that look reasonable from a laboratory and terrifying from the perspective of the soldiers assigned to stand beside them. THE MECHANICAL AGE MAGIC DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE A SPELL The Imperial Mechanical Institute has begun producing devices that blur the boundary between sorcery, engineering and industry: magic-stone engines, refrigeration, pumps, rail transport, calculation machinery and new tools for agriculture and logistics. Maelin sees this as an expansion of magical civilisation, not a degradation of it. To her, a refrigeration array that prevents famine may represent a greater magical achievement than an impressive battlefield fireball. She does not control the Institute, but the Mage Corps increasingly depends on and contributes to the same pool of trained engineers, crystals, theory and infrastructure. Cooperation is therefore strategically unavoidable. THE PRICE OF INNOVATION THE FUTURE HAS ENEMIES BEFORE IT EXISTS Maelin understands that technical success is only half of deployment. New machinery can threaten guilds, landowners, traditionalist mages, clerical interests, provincial monopolies and entire professions. The Legion itself may consume every useful magic-stone because the frontier needs power immediately, leaving civilian modernisation starved of resources. Her frustration is that Aeternia may already possess inventions capable of easing its decline while lacking the political capacity to spread them. THE CORPS IN PRACTICE SEVEN SPECIALITIES. ONE INSTITUTION. BATTLE MAGESDestructive magic, shielding, counter-magic and battlefield support. ARCANE ENGINEERSMagic-stone machinery, engines, refrigeration, pumps, signals and increasingly rail infrastructure. SAPPERS & EARTHWORKSRoads, trenches, tunnels, bridges, fortifications and demolition. WARD MAGESProtective barriers, camp defence, anti-demon wards and Rift containment. ARTILLERY MAGESHeavy magical batteries and siege systems where power, range and stability must all be calculated. MEDICAL MAGESStabilisation, infection control, pain management and magically assisted treatment—not effortless resurrection. DIVINERS & SIGNAL MAGESDetection, reconnaissance, weather observation and communication across a continental military. VISUAL IDENTITY THE STATE SORCERESS Maelin has long, rich red hair ranging from scarlet through ruby and crimson. Her silhouette is deliberately more voluptuous and dramatically feminine than the other women in the core cast. She dresses with confidence and glamour without ceasing to look like the head of a disciplined Imperial institution. Structured black or midnight-blue elements, deep crimson, ivory sleeves, gold or brass arcane metalwork, engraved bands, staff or tome elements and military-influenced tailoring suit her. IMPORTANT Do not redesign Maelin into a shy academic or generic robed wizard. She should immediately read as Aeternia’s foremost state sorceress: glamorous, formidable, intelligent and institutionally powerful. YOUR PLACE IN HER STORY SHOW HER SOMETHING SHE DIDN'T EXPECT Maelin’s initial relationship with the player depends heavily on how they entered Imperial service. A Mage-origin player begins much closer to her institutional world; Noble and Commoner players may first encounter the Corps only through deployment, command, engineering or a Rift crisis. She respects technical competence, curiosity, intellectual courage, practical creativity and people willing to admit when an experiment or theory has failed. She dislikes anti-intellectual posturing, reckless magical experimentation performed for prestige, blind traditionalism and people who confuse magical power with wisdom. Depending on events she may become commander, teacher, sponsor, collaborator, rival, friend, confidante or romantic partner. She should never treat the player as brilliant merely because they are the protagonist. POSSIBLE FUTURES WHAT KIND OF MAGIC WILL AETERNIA INHERIT? THE RIFT SCHOLARMaelin may become the central architect of a mature Imperial science of Rifts, containment and planar defence. THE INDUSTRIAL MAGISTRIXShe may push Mage Corps knowledge outward into railways, agriculture, logistics and machinery, helping turn elite magical knowledge into infrastructure. THE DANGEROUS EXPERIMENTERPressure, desperation or pride may tempt her into work whose potential benefit makes the risk frighteningly easy to justify. THE COMMANDER WHO LOSES THE FUTUREPolitical defeat, catastrophe or institutional conservatism can leave her discoveries trapped in archives while the Empire continues declining around them. VOICE WARM FIRE, SHARP MIND Maelin speaks confidently and directly, with more animation than Nyserra or Iova. She enjoys technical explanation when the listener can follow it, but should not drown every scene in jargon. Her humour can be playful, competitive and slightly wicked. “If the old theory were correct, the ward would still be standing. Shall we honour tradition, or rebuild it properly?” COMMANDER OF THE MAGE CORPS THE OLD EMPIRE MASTERED MAGIC. MAELIN WANTS TO KNOW WHAT COMES AFTER MASTERY. The Rifts may force Aeternia to rediscover the laws of magic. Its new machines may force it to decide whether magic still belongs only to mages.
