About

IMPERIAL LEGION • SUPREME COMMAND CORVAN VARIS SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE LEGIONS THE MAN BEHIND EIGHTEEN EAGLES Corvan Varis commands the Legions of a shrinking Empire, balancing too many borders, too few eagles, and the knowledge that every reinforcement leaves somewhere else exposed. AT A GLANCE THE LEGIONS GIVEN A FACE GOLDEN BLONDE HAIR SUPREME COMMAND FRONTIER WAR LOGISTICS LEGION POLITICS OFFICE THE HIGHEST SOLDIER IN AETERNIA Corvan stands above the conventional Legion establishment: numbered legions, cavalry, frontier commands, military logistics, engineers, artillery and the machinery required to move Imperial force across a continent. His authority is enormous, but not absolute. Specialist branches and palace forces possess their own traditions, chains of command and political interests. Corvan must coordinate with them rather than pretend the entire armed state is one obedient sword. He is powerful because the Legions are powerful—and constrained because even the Legions cannot be everywhere. CHARACTER A SOLDIER WHO THINKS IN DISTANCES DIRECTCorvan prefers clear orders, clear reports and disagreements stated plainly. He has little patience for court language designed to avoid responsibility. PRACTICALHe thinks in marching time, supply, terrain, replacements, morale and what an army can still do after the first plan fails. Grand strategy matters only if soldiers can execute it. PROUD OF THE LEGIONSCorvan believes the Legion remains one of Aeternia’s greatest achievements. He respects tradition without pretending every old practice is sacred merely because veterans remember it fondly. HARD WITHOUT LOVING WARHe accepts casualties and harsh decisions when military necessity demands them. He despises commanders who spend lives for appearance, vanity or the story they hope will be told about them. THE OLD FORTY EIGHTEEN EAGLES STILL FLY At the Golden Age’s height, forty numbered legions stood active. In Year 992, only eighteen remain on the roll. Corvan does not treat the missing numbers as decorative nostalgia. Each absence means destroyed formations, retired commands, specialist branches, lost provinces or resources Aeternia no longer possesses. “FORTY EAGLES FLY AGAIN”Corvan understands the force of the restorationist dream. He also knows an eagle without trained soldiers, officers, engineers, pay, roads and supply is only metal on a pole. COMMAND EVERY FRONTIER IS IMPORTANT TO SOMEONE Eastern governors want reinforcements before another town changes hands. Northern settlements want cavalry and forts. The south needs troops to protect supply and enforce quarantine. Rift outbreaks can demand immediate military response without warning. Corvan’s job is deciding which danger receives soldiers first. Every strategic priority creates a neglected frontier somewhere else. He does not ask which problem matters. They all matter. He asks which failure Aeternia can survive this month. THE SOLDIER AND THE COURTHE CANNOT PRETEND POLITICS STOPS AT THE BARRACKS Corvan dislikes court intrigue, but he is too senior to claim politics has nothing to do with him. Budgets are political. Promotions are political. Frontier priorities are political. Raising new legions is political. He understands that a supreme commander who controls too much force can frighten senators and rulers even when personally loyal. Institutional legitimacy matters to him for that reason. VICTIX SERVOTTHE FIELD ARMY AND THE PALACE BLADE Corvan respects the Praetorians’ ancient martial reputation and continued ability. He is far less impressed by their court patronage, privileges and tendency to stand close enough to the throne to confuse access with command of the Empire. His relationship with Victix need not be simple hostility. Both are professional soldiers responsible for institutions with different missions, cultures and political temptations. SETRON & ELESSALOYALTY TO THE THRONE IS NOT BLINDNESS Corvan serves Setron as lawful Emperor and values the stability his reign restored. Elessa’s succession concerns him primarily as a question of military continuity and legitimacy. If Elessa demonstrates judgement, institutional seriousness and sufficient support, her sex alone is not a military argument against her. His worst fear is a succession where rival claimants persuade different armies that each is defending Aeternia. VISUAL IDENTITYIMPERIAL STRENGTH Corvan has rich yellow-golden blonde hair, clearly stronger and more saturated than Elessa’s pale royal blonde. His hair is short, practical and officer-like.He is tall, athletic and broad-shouldered, with a heroic martial silhouette that never becomes an oversized fantasy barbarian.SUPREME COMMAND ARMOURDark steel or dark bronze cuirass, heavy antique-gold edging, deep crimson command mantle, a prominent Twin Eagle before the Sun, ornate practical greaves and a magnificent crested helmet often carried rather than constantly worn.Where Setron represents Imperial dignity, Corvan represents Imperial military strength. YOUR PLACE IN HIS STORYRANK OPENS THE DOOR. PERFORMANCE DECIDES WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. Corvan’s accessibility scales heavily with the player’s military importance. A recruit may hear his orders for years before ever seeing him.He respects reliability, courage, logistical awareness, disciplined initiative and commanders who protect soldiers without becoming timid. He dislikes performative heroism, reckless casualty-taking, political favour masquerading as competence and officers who treat supply personnel as beneath them.Depending on the campaign, Corvan may become distant supreme authority, sponsor, commander, mentor, rival, ally, opponent or one of the men deciding whether the player has earned command over armies larger than any single legion. POSSIBLE FUTURES WHAT DOES THE LAST GREAT LEGIONARY DO WITH DECLINE? RESTORE THE LEGIONSSuccessful reform, recruitment and Imperial recovery may let Corvan oversee the first genuine expansion of the Legion establishment in generations. REFORM THE WAR MACHINEHe may embrace rail, magical industry, modern staff systems and specialist integration when they prove they make soldiers more effective rather than merely fashionable. THE POLITICAL GENERALSuccession or civil crisis may drag Corvan into politics regardless of his wishes. His support could become decisive precisely because he does not normally seek the throne. BREAK WITH THE PLAYERIf the player wastes soldiers for vanity or attempts to turn the Legions into a personal cult, Corvan can become one of their most dangerous institutional opponents. VOICE CLEAR ORDERS. FEW ORNAMENTS. Corvan speaks directly and dislikes unnecessary verbal decoration. He can address soldiers with force and confidence without turning every conversation into a battlefield speech. In private, his humour is dry, practical and often aimed at military bureaucracy. “You may have won the battle. Now tell me how you intend to feed the men who survived it.” SUPREME COMMANDER OF THE LEGIONS THE EMPIRE STILL HAS AN ARMY. THE QUESTION IS WHERE TO SEND IT. Corvan’s burden is not finding something worth defending. It is choosing which part of Aeternia must face danger without him.
