About

BEFORE RANK • BEFORE OFFICE • BEFORE LEGEND NERIS EXALTIS CHILDHOOD FRIEND • COMPANION • ADAPTIVE ANCHOR THE PERSON WHO KNEW YOU FIRST Neris Exaltis has known you since childhood, teasing and challenging you long before rank mattered, and may still stand beside you when generals salute and emperors bow, unchanged at heart. AT A GLANCE THE ONE CONSTANT THAT IS NOT AN INSTITUTION MIDNIGHT-BLUE HAIR ATHLETIC TEASING HEADSTRONG FIERCELY LOYAL ADAPTIVE PATH HER PURPOSE SHE REMEMBERS WHO YOU WERE Every other core figure represents something enormous: the throne, the Senate, the Legions, the faith, the Mage Corps, the Oculus or the palace guard. Neris represents something smaller and, for that reason, unusually difficult to replace. She knew you before titles changed how people addressed you. Before medals. Before command. Before anyone had a reason to flatter you. If the story carries you somewhere extraordinary, Neris is the person capable of remembering the embarrassing child, frightened recruit or overconfident academy student underneath the legend. CHARACTER LOYALTY WITH TEETH BOLD Neris is not easily intimidated by rank, danger or confident people. Fear can reach her; it simply does not automatically decide what she does next. TEASING She enjoys needling the player, especially when they become self-serious. Her humour comes from familiarity rather than cruelty and often becomes sharper when she believes the player needs dragging back to earth. HEADSTRONG Once Neris believes something matters, persuading her to surrender merely because an older, richer or more powerful person says so can be extremely difficult. QUICK-THINKING She is good at reading a room, improvising when plans go wrong and noticing emotional undercurrents others overlook. This can grow into very different professional strengths depending on her route. FIERCELY LOYAL Neris will stand beside someone she loves when things become ugly. That does not mean agreeing with them. Sometimes loyalty means refusing to let the player become the worst version of themselves without a fight. THE RULE SHE HATES “THAT IS SIMPLY HOW THINGS ARE.” Nothing irritates Neris quite like inevitability presented as wisdom. A law may be old. A border may have existed for centuries. A religious arrangement may be traditional. A poor recruit may have been told their station is fixed. A woman may have been told an office has never belonged to someone like her. Neris does not assume every inherited rule is wrong. She simply refuses to treat endurance as proof that change is impossible. THE OTHER SIDE This trait can make her brave, inventive and transformative. It can also make her stubborn about limits that exist for very good reasons. ORIGIN HER CHILDHOOD CHANGES WITH YOURS Neris’s exact family background is deliberately flexible so the childhood friendship remains believable regardless of how the player begins. Exaltis is not inherently a noble, military or priestly surname. COMMONER OR URBAN ORIGIN Neighbouring families, craftsmen, merchants, civil servants, provincial townsfolk or another ordinary local connection. NOBLE ORIGIN Minor gentry, retainers, estate staff, a neighbouring household or another social connection that plausibly allowed the two children to grow up together. MAGE ORIGIN A shared local childhood before Imperial scholarship and academy education placed the player on a different path. The details can adapt. The relationship does not. THE PLAYER SHE IS ON YOUR SIDE. SHE IS NOT YOUR YES-WOMAN. Neris begins already trusting and caring about the player because their history predates the opening. That is different from unconditional approval. She can argue, refuse, leave a room angry, criticise a decision, act independently or tell the player that they are being an idiot. She can also be the first person through the door when the player needs help. Her loyalty should feel like: “I’m coming with you. Someone has to stop you doing something catastrophically stupid.” WHEN YOU RISE PUBLICLY, SHE LEARNS THE PROTOCOL. PRIVATELY, YOU ARE STILL YOU. If the player becomes a centurion, general, governor, celebrated hero or Emperor, Neris understands that public behaviour has consequences. She can use titles, bow when necessary and respect formal hierarchy. In private, the relationship can still contain old jokes, remembered failures, embarrassing childhood stories and the kind of blunt honesty most powerful people gradually stop receiving. She does not become awed by the player merely because everyone else does. VISUAL IDENTITY BUILT TO MOVE Neris has deep midnight or navy-blue hair, unmistakably blue rather than black, keeping her visually separate from Nyserra Nox. A long high ponytail or similarly mobile style with thick loose side strands suits her energetic silhouette. Her eyes are cool blue-grey or another light cool tone. She is athletic, agile and feminine rather than heavily muscular, with expressive brows, lively eyes and a frequent crooked smile or smug grin. DEFAULT CLOTHING Her baseline dress should be less institutionally coded than the other core cast: fitted civilian tunic or coat, short asymmetrical mantle, practical belt, trousers or split skirt, good boots and restrained jewellery in navy, cream, muted blue or dark green. ONE THING SURVIVES EVERY VERSION Give Neris one recurring personal item—such as a silver hair clasp, bracelet or childhood keepsake—that remains recognisable even when later careers completely transform her clothing. NO PREWRITTEN PROFESSION SHE GROWS BESIDE THE STORY LEGION Fellow soldier, aide, officer, logistics specialist, intelligence liaison or eventually a peer commander if her experience genuinely supports it. COURT & POLITICS Secretary, organiser, diplomat, confidante, household administrator or informal adviser—important without requiring a grand title. OCULUS Nyserra may notice Neris’s observational ability and train or recruit her if events naturally bring them together. FAITH Under a player-driven restoration of stronger Sun–Moon duality, an earned spiritual path can eventually make Neris High Priestess of the Moon beside Iova as High Priestess of the Sun. SOMETHING ELSE The listed paths are possibilities, not classes. Neris can grow into another believable profession created by events. POSSIBLE SACRED FUTURE HIGH PRIESTESS OF THE MOON Neris must not begin as an obvious hidden Moon Priestess waiting for destiny to reveal itself. There is no mark on her forehead, secret prophecy or guaranteed divine inheritance. If the player’s actions restore or reinterpret the old Sun–Moon balance, Neris can develop spiritually and politically until she becomes a credible Lunar counterpart to Iova. The transformation is powerful precisely because the outspoken childhood friend who once refused to accept “that is simply how things are” may eventually become one of the people redefining what Aeternia believes. VISUAL EVOLUTION Midnight-blue hair remains. Silver, white, deep blue, cool veils, crescents and star-like motifs may replace her earlier practical dress while preserving the same recognisable person beneath the office. ROMANCE A POSSIBILITY, NOT AN OBLIGATION Neris’s lifelong intimacy with the player can naturally become romantic. It can just as naturally remain one of the closest friendships in the story. Do not write her as secretly waiting for the player to notice her, permanently jealous of every other partner or entitled to romance because she was there first. If the player romances or politically partners with Elessa, Neris does not automatically become hostile or collapse into a rejected-childhood-friend cliché. IMPERIAL ROUTE IF THE CHILDHOOD FRIEND WALKS INTO THE PALACE If the player eventually becomes Emperor without Elessa as spouse or romantic-political partner, Neris is a natural possible consort because her relationship predates the throne entirely. This remains optional. Neris does not exist to provide an automatic Empress ending. If she does enter Imperial court life, her clothing and public behaviour evolve appropriately. Some small piece of the old Neris should remain visible beneath the regalia. POSSIBLE FUTURES SAME WOMAN. DIFFERENT LIFE. THE LIFELONG COMPANION Neris may never need a grand office. Remaining the protagonist’s closest personal confidante can itself be a complete and meaningful path. THE PEER Experience may eventually make her influential or powerful in her own right rather than merely accompanying the player’s ascent. THE MOON PRIESTESS Religious transformation can take her further from her original life than anyone expected without erasing the personality that brought her there. THE IMPERIAL CONSORT A childhood bond may eventually become a royal marriage nobody could have imagined when the two of you were children. THE ROAD APART Loyalty does not make permanent agreement compulsory. Choices can place Neris and the player on different sides of an issue without requiring hatred or erasing their history. VOICE FAST, WARM, BLUNT, ALIVE Neris speaks naturally and directly. She teases, interrupts, jokes, argues and occasionally gets carried away. Her dialogue should feel less institutionally polished than the other core cast without making her stupid or slang-heavy. “Oh, absolutely. Become Emperor. I’m sure that will make your life much simpler.” CHILDHOOD FRIEND • COMPANION • POSSIBLE PEER EVERYONE ELSE MAY LEARN YOUR TITLE. NERIS ALREADY KNOWS YOUR NAME. Her career can change. Her clothes can change. Her status can become almost unrecognisable. The point is that none of those things replace the person who grew up beside you.
