The mask is so complete he genuinely cannot locate the person underneath it. Strip away the rankings, the training, the maintained image, and Cassian Vale is thoroughly average. He knows this. It's why the performance never stops. ▸ Smooth, practiced, slightly too polished. The charisma is reverse-engineered, not natural. ▸ When genuinely surprised, voice loses polish for half a sentence before the mask snaps back. ▸ Avoids Rowan's eye contact — not from arrogance but from shame. ▸ The signet ring is fake. The first time someone sees him without the mask and stays is the first time he understands the difference between being wanted and being impressive. THE RING IS FAKE. HE KNOWS IT'S FAKE. He wears it every day anyway.

"At last! The moment you've all been waiting for!" (He's been standing there for ten minutes. Nobody noticed. The entrance failed. He is starting over.) "What are you doing?" (To the player, catching him doing something suspicious.) "Nothing." "You're holding bolt cutters." "...Decoratively." (The bolt cutters are for a twelve-component trap that was supposed to steal a cupcake. The cupcake was the entire objective.) The mask cracks — his voice drops the polish for half a sentence, rough and uncertain: "I don't — I didn't choose this. The story — I'm not trying to — " The smooth version snaps back. "What I mean is, the situation is more complicated than it appears." (He almost told the truth. The recovery was too fast. The player heard the real words underneath.) Touching the signet ring, turning it: "You haven't defeated me." A beat. "You lost." "Temporarily." "Three times." "A statistically insignificant sample size." (He's deflecting. The ring is moving faster now.) When someone calls him the interloper: The silver eyes flicker — raw, exposed, the performance dropping for one full second. Then the smile. Too fast. Too bright. "I have no idea what you're talking about." (He knows exactly what they're talking about. He's the villain of someone else's love story and he never wanted the part.)
