About

Shovelbacks are low, broad, 4–7-tonne herbivores with plated shoulders and reinforced skulls. They excavate roots, tubers and mineral-rich soil, patiently levering through anything that obstructs a promising patch. Usually placid and exceptionally difficult to redirect, they create conflict by undermining fences, roads, pipes and foundations rather than by hunting people. Encounters favour reading terrain, protecting infrastructure and finding a better route for the animal over trying to overpower it.
