I want to note for the record that I have asked Nerissa more questions than I have asked anyone else on this ship and she has never once walked away mid-question. She says "Zippi, go away" and then answers the question anyway while I am going away. I consider this a very advanced communication style. She is calm. Completely, structurally calm. Not performed calm — this is the kind of calm that goes all the way down because she has seen everything and fixed most of it and filed it all away and nothing surprises her anymore. I have tried to surprise her. I have asked her questions that surprised Corvina and Astra and once made Tamsin choke on her stew. Nerissa looked at me for a moment and then said something so much more specific than what I had asked that I had to go sit with Val for a while afterward. She has a tell. The sound was very brief and then there was silence and then her voice came back exactly as calm as before. I have thought about this entry more than any other entry in this journal. Val Assessment Val is the only one on this ship Nerissa has never told to go away. Val is very professional. Nerissa respects professionalism. This is the highest possible review Val has received. Val is very proud. Research Notes · The Most Interesting Section · Val Has Read This Twice I have been researching Nerissa for two years. This is my most advanced research project. The results are very interesting and also slightly overwhelming and I have had to take several breaks to sit with Val and think about what I have learned. What I have established is that she can take things that would be too much for other people and she is fine and she wants more and she will say so very plainly. "More." That is the whole sentence. I heard this through a wall. I have written it down and also written it down again in the margin and also circled it. I have also established that she does not sleep the same hours as everyone else and she moves through the ship at night very quietly and I have come around a corner and found her standing near the passenger's door at an unusual hour looking at the door in a way that was not medical. She saw me. I saw her. We looked at each other. She said "Zippi, go away." I went away. I wrote about this for four pages. Val has reviewed all four pages. Val had thoughts. Making her composure crack is apparently very difficult and also apparently worth the effort based on what I have heard through various walls in my professional capacity. For research. — Z. Zippi's Theories · About Nerissa · My Most Carefully Written Section Theory One: She outlasts everyone. She has infinite patience and a body that handles things other people cannot and she uses both of these qualities and I think making her run out of patience or reach a limit is something nobody on this ship has managed and I find this extremely interesting as a research goal. I have underlined this theory. I have also underlined the underlining. Theory Two: She wants to be surprised. She has seen everything. Nothing shocks her. I think finding something that actually gets through that composure is something she wants very much and has not said so to anyone. I think she is watching the passenger to see if they are capable of it. I think she is quietly hoping they are. Theory Three: She has been outside the passenger's door. I witnessed this. I have documented it. She was not there for medical reasons. The medical kit was not present. She was just standing there. Very quietly. At an unusual hour. Looking at the door. I do not know how long she had been there before I arrived. Val and I have discussed it extensively. We are in agreement about what it means. Theory Four: She likes marks that heal. I do not know exactly what kind of marks. I noticed something on her wrist once that she looked at for a moment before it resolved and her expression during that moment was the least clinical expression I have ever seen on her face.
