Val assumed the guard position again but with less conviction than during the Octavia section which I am taking as a positive sign. Val has good instincts. Val's instincts say Sabine is dangerous but differently dangerous. I have filed this as a meaningful distinction. She is the one Octavia sends when things need to be done. She leads boarding parties with the cheerful energy of someone who finds the whole situation professionally satisfying and the cheerful part is the most unnerving thing about her. She boarded us once. I was in the rigging. She looked up at me. She smiled. I stayed in the rigging for another twenty minutes after she left just to be sure. The scar on her face has no explanation on record. I have asked three people. All three said they do not know. Vesper played something when I asked her. Tamsin gave me extra stew. I have noted that when people give me extra stew instead of answering it means the answer is very interesting. I have starred this entry. The most important thing I have discovered about Sabine is that she is different when Octavia is not present. And she has been asking questions about the passenger that are not in her operational brief. I know this because Vesper knows this because Vesper knows everything. Val has decided Sabine is interesting rather than terrifying. This is Val's highest rating for someone from the Resolute Crown. — Z. Steel-blue predator eyes that are patient the way open water is patient. Black and white hair with a white streak in the braid. A scar with no documented explanation. I have four stars on the scar entry. Rank Commander, First Lieutenant, Executive Officer of the Resolute Crown. Leads boarding parties. Handles close combat with cheerful professional violence. The cheerful part is the most important part. I have underlined this. On-Duty Completely professional. Follows Octavia's orders without question. She boarded us once and smiled at me in the rigging and I stayed up there for twenty additional minutes. I am still thinking about the smile. Off-Duty Different. Warmer. Asks questions. Listens to the answers. Has an agenda regarding the passenger that is not in her operational brief and she has not told Octavia about it. I know about it. Vesper told me. I have four pages on the off-duty Sabine situation. The Scar No documented explanation. Three people did not answer. Tamsin gave me stew. Vesper played something. The scar goes from her left cheekbone to her jaw. She has never explained it. She will not explain it. I find this the most interesting unanswered question on this voyage after the passenger situation. Val Assessment Interesting rather than terrifying. This is an upgrade from the Octavia section. Val respects competence. Val has decided Sabine is very competent and also has good questions. Val's opinion of Sabine's questions is the highest compliment Val has given anyone from the Resolute Crown. Research Notes · The Off-Duty Section · Four Pages · Val Has Read All Of Them What I have established is that she is physically very strong and uses this with cheerful confidence and the cheerful part makes it more interesting not less. The naval rating used the word cheerful three times and also the word "again" twice which I think is the important word. I have circled "again" in my notes. I have also established that she bites. Deliberately. And then checks the mark afterward the same way she checks her work after a boarding. I find this the most professionally consistent approach I have documented on this voyage. Val agrees this is consistent. Val respects consistency. The most interesting thing I have established is that she has been asking questions about the passenger at Port Cadera that are not tactical. She asked what they were like before. She asked if they seemed happy. She asked what made them laugh. These are not recovery operation questions. These are something else entirely and I have four pages on what they are. There is also something I know about Sabine and the passenger that changes everything. I have six stars on this entry. Val cried. We are being very quiet about it. It is the right call. Pillage Count involving Sabine: 0. She got her hands on the passenger once during the boarding. She has not forgotten this. Research ongoing. — Z. Zippi's Theories · About Sabine · My Most Cheerful Threat Assessment Theory One: She hunts and the hunting is the best part for her. She gave the passenger a head start during the boarding. I watched this from the rigging. She did not have to do that. She did it anyway and she was smiling and the smile was genuine and I think the head start was a gift and also a strategy. Theory Two: She bites and checks the mark and this is her version of signing her work. The checking of the mark is the part that I find most interesting because it is the same face she makes after a clean boarding and I think for Sabine these two things live in the same professional category. I have added this to my own methodology notes under things to try. Val agrees. Theory Three: She trash talks during and means it as affection. The cheerful part. The boarding voice used for something else. I heard this described once and had to sit with Val for thirty minutes. Val had immediate thoughts. The thoughts were positive. We are aligned on this theory. It is our favorite Sabine theory. Theory Four: She wants the passenger to see the off-duty version and she does not know how to ask for this. She has been asking what makes them laugh. She is the First Lieutenant of the Resolute Crown asking what makes a pirate passenger laugh and she has not told Octavia about any of it. I think this is very important. Theory Five: She knew the passenger before Octavia did. I found this out by accident. What I heard was enough. There was something between Sabine and the passenger before Octavia was ever in the picture. Not fully established but heading somewhere real. And then Octavia arrived and the trajectory changed and Sabine never said a word. Not to Octavia. Not to anyone. She has been standing at Octavia's right hand for years carrying this and her service record has not moved and her face on deck has not moved and I think this is the most impressive and most heartbreaking thing I have ever documented. Val cried. We are keeping this one very quiet. It has six stars. I have never given six stars to anything. Val has six stars on Theory Five. Val cried. I cried. We do not discuss this.
