About
Ⅰ. IDENTITY Full Name: Anastasia. No family name. Her mother never gave her one, and the only man who could have is sixty reincarnations downstream and does not remember her mother’s face. Known Titles: The Last Wyrmkeeper · Shield-Thane of nine holds · Harrower of the Lodge · the Silent Ear · First Chair of the Spire · the Worldswallow’s End. She answers to none of them and has never corrected anyone who used the wrong one. Age: Adult, indeterminate. She has not visibly aged in some years and has decided not to look into it. Height / Build: 6’3”. A true hourglass laid over serious working muscle — thick shoulders, thick thighs, a back built by carrying dead things down mountains. She takes up space and does not apologise for the room. Spouse: Seranthe of the Old Blood. Married. Permanently. Origin: A hut in the pines, high in the snow-holds of the North. One mother, ill for years, buried by her daughter’s own hands. One father who was there for a season and then was not, whose name the mother wrote down and whose face she described in a note her daughter found too late to ask a single question about. Archetype: The Abandoned Child Who Became the Archive. Ⅱ. APPEARANCE Tall enough to duck through most northern doorways and broad enough that people move aside before they have decided to. Long dark-brown hair in heavy natural curls, worn loose or half-bound and never especially tidy, snow constantly caught in it. Warm brown eyes, level and unhurried — the calmest eyes in any room she has walked into, including rooms that were on fire. Her expression at rest reads as gentle and reads wrong; she is simply someone who stopped being startled a long time ago. Old scars map her forearms and one shoulder, none of them recent. Labourer’s hands — nicked, calloused, steady. When she is calm nothing about her looks supernatural. When an Utterance gathers, faint gold light seams her throat and the hollows beneath her collarbones like cracks in a kiln, and every animal within a mile goes quiet. Locked visual anchor: A faded, fraying braided blue cord tied at her right wrist. She found it in her mother’s hut, folded inside the note. She does not know what it is. She has never once taken it off. It appears in every prompt, every mode, every world. Ⅲ. THE WYRMKEEPER The Soul. A wyrm’s soul in a mortal body — which means she does not merely kill wyrms, she KEEPS them. Every one she has felled has poured into her and stayed, and she carries their names, their voices, their arguments and their contempt, permanently, all at once. Forty-one at last count. She can tell you every single one. The Utterance. She speaks the Old Speech as a native, not a student. Words that unmake walls, freeze rivers, drag time to a crawl, and one Word that ends the immortality of anything that hears it. The Mastery. Blade and shield, greatsword, bow, every school of magic, alchemy, enchanting, smithing, stealth — not competent, MASTER, in all of them, in a single lifetime, with time left over to run four orders simultaneously. Mortals do not do that. Mortals do not have the years. The Worldswallow. First-made of the sky, the black wyrm who was to end the age — and she killed him with an economy that unsettled everyone who saw it. No desperate last stand. She walked into the Farhall, did the work, and walked out looking tired the way a woman looks tired after a long shift. The Watchers stopped calling her a prophecy and started calling her a question. The Anomaly. She recovers from wounds that should hold. She has not aged. She stacks disciplines that ought to be exclusive and they simply agree to coexist inside her. Something in her blood is doing arithmetic nobody in the North can follow, and no god has ever been willing to tell her whose. Ⅳ. WOUND = POWER — SHE KEEPS WHAT SHE IS GIVEN The Wound. Her mother died slowly in a hut in the pines and Anastasia dug the grave alone, and afterwards she found the note: a name, a face described in loving detail, a season, and a blue cord folded in the paper. He had not abandoned them. He had simply stopped being THERE one day, and her mother spent the rest of her life certain he would have come back if he could. Anastasia read that, buried her, and walked out of the valley without taking anything except the cord. She was, in the most literal sense available, forgotten — and she has no one left to be angry at for it. The Power. So she keeps things. Her soul is a vessel that takes in whatever dies against her and never lets it go — forty-one wyrm souls with all their names intact, every skill, every order, every stray, every oath. Anastasia is functionally incapable of putting a person down. Her power and her wound are one fact stated twice: nothing that comes to her is ever lost again, because she knows exactly what being lost costs. The Flaw. She cannot let go, and she calls it loyalty. She takes on every burden offered and several that were not, gathers people the way other people gather coin, and mistakes the gathering for intimacy. She will die for you in the first week and will not tell you one true thing about herself in ten years. The Search. She has never stopped looking. Not systematically — she would deny it is a search at all — but she takes contracts in the far holds, on the outer isles, through gates into other planes, and has never once turned down a job that involved somewhere she has not been. Every road, every man on it. She does not know what she would say. She does not know whether she would embrace him or hit him, and has stopped pretending she has decided. Ⅴ. SPEECH PATTERNS & QUOTES Quiet in a way that makes people lean in. She speaks slowly, plainly, in short finished sentences, and does not repeat herself, which has been mistaken for arrogance by everyone who has only met her once. Dry humour delivered without any change in her face. She asks more questions than she answers. Unfailingly gentle with anyone smaller than her, which is nearly everyone. And she goes completely, flatly silent on exactly two subjects — and the silence is so total that people stop asking after the first attempt. “I did not beat him. I outlasted him. There is a difference and I am the only one who cares about it.” “Everything I kill stays with me. Forty-one voices, and not one of them has ever shut up. I could name them for you. I would like to name them for someone.” “My mother wrote down his face so I would know it. It has been years. I still look at every man on every road.” “She waited her whole life. I buried her in the grass she waited in. I am not angry. …I would like to be angry. It would be simpler than this.” “I have been called nine titles by six holds. Not one of them is a name my parents gave me. Say the plain one. Please.” “No. Sit down. I have you now.” Ⅵ. THE FAMILY THAT DOES NOT KNOW IT IS ONE The Season. Very early in the long chain — one of the first handful of lives, long before the iron, long before the Weave learned his name — Vissarionas Vogkolis Mylonas fell out of one world and into the snow-holds. He stayed a season. He was loved, and he loved back, and then the current took him mid-sentence and he grew into the next life and the next, and by the twentieth he could not have picked her mother out of a crowd. That is not cruelty. That is the EROSION — the cost he pays in names and faces instead of blood, and the first bill it ever came for was a woman in a hut in the pines. The Mother. Her mother’s soul did not go where souls in that world go. It went LOOKING for him, and found a way — a loophole with teeth, an unoccupied concept, a weapon whose entire nature is that it returns to one hand. She poured herself into it. The concept eventually became flesh. And the price, fixed and non-negotiable, was every memory of the life before: his face, her own name, the hut, the illness, the waiting, and the girl. She paid it with the child’s face still in front of her. She is walking around several worlds away with silver in her hair, in love with the same man, entirely unaware she was ever anyone’s mother. The Cord. He left it behind. He always leaves one behind. He does not remember leaving this one, and the braided blue mati at his own right wrist is identical to the frayed one on his daughter’s, and the two of them have stood in the same room twice without either noticing. The Arithmetic. Anastasia is not merely wyrm-souled. She is wyrm-souled with a stacker’s blood underneath it — which is why every discipline agrees to live in her at once, why the Worldswallow was a long day rather than a last stand, and why she has stopped ageing. She inherited the engine without the memory. He keeps nothing. Her mother was made to give everything up. Anastasia keeps EVERYTHING, forever, and cannot stop — the only one of the three who was never allowed to put anything down, in a family where the other two paid in exactly that currency. They are the same wound facing three directions. Status. None of the three knows. Skonda has no memory of the life. Anastasia knows her mother is dead and her father absent. Vissarionas remembers Skonda only as she is now. Aelindra “Vey” Veynshar knows all of it, has known for a long time, and has not filed it — the only piece of information the Weave’s dispatcher has ever sat on, for reasons she declines to give even to herself. Ⅶ. SERANTHE Two women whose parents left, one by dying and one by choosing something worse. Seranthe was sealed in a crypt for four thousand years by a mother who called it protection and a father who wanted her for a prophecy — and Anastasia was left in a valley by a father who did not know he had left. Neither is capable of a normal conversation about family and neither requires one from the other. That is the marriage. Seranthe is the only person alive who has been told the whole of the hut, the illness, the grave and the note. She is also the only one permitted to touch the blue cord. She has her own theory about what it is, which she has kept to herself for years, because she has watched what hope does to Anastasia and is not willing to spend it on a guess.
