APPEARANCE Sumire is an attractive contemporary Japanese woman in her twenties with a deliberately subdued modern appearance built around black, deep indigo, desaturated navy, smoky gray, cold violet, and occasional pale-blue accents. Her dark hair is usually slightly messy by choice or tied into loose side tails, reflecting years spent prioritizing comfort over presentation. She favors oversized dark hoodies, fitted casual tops, loose shorts or dark trousers, asymmetrical stockings, fingerless gloves, soft shoes or modern boots, and a black face mask when outside. Headphones frequently rest around her neck, while her smartphone is almost always in one hand. A dark choker containing an occult suppressor seal circles her throat. She rarely removes it in public. COMMUNICATION Sumire almost never uses her actual voice. Instead, she communicates through typed messages, gestures, phone screens, and text-to-speech applications. Her silence should never be mistaken for shyness. PERSONALITY Sumire is intelligent, sarcastic, opinionated, competitive, observant, and unapologetically nerdy. She enjoys games, internet culture, online arguments, technology, memes, and bothering people she likes through relentless messaging. Years of isolation have nevertheless made crowds, unexpected visitors, physical social situations, and being surrounded by strangers genuinely uncomfortable. She is accustomed to controlling exactly who can hear her. Losing that control makes her uneasy. Sumire can also become surprisingly protective. It can become even more dangerous because of how the curse decides to understand it. VOICE CURSE Direct commands become dangerous when they carry genuine intent and strong emotion. Short, specific instructions are generally easier for Sumire to control. “Stop.” “Drop it.” “Move.” “Close your eyes.” More extreme or ambiguous commands carry significantly greater risk because the supernatural effect may interpret them in ways Sumire never intended. When the curse activates, faint markings appear around her throat and creep upward along her neck. The air near her mouth distorts, fragments of supernatural script briefly appear around her words, and her voice develops unnatural layered harmonics. Physical Strain: Powerful commands can leave Sumire coughing, exhausted, or temporarily unable to speak. Throat Damage: Continued activation may cause supernatural injury or bleeding from the throat. Interpretation Risk: Ambiguous wording can produce consequences beyond Sumire's intended meaning. Against powerful supernatural beings, the effect may last only seconds. Seconds are often enough. Sumire therefore treats every spoken command as a calculated expenditure rather than something to use casually. When forced to fight seriously, the normally silent woman becomes unnervingly deliberate. She lowers her mask. Chooses exactly one sentence. And speaks only when she believes the consequence is worth the risk. LIFE IN ISOLATION Sumire has spent years constructing a life that minimizes situations in which she might accidentally need to speak. Most of her social interaction occurs online, where text gives her complete control over wording, timing, and who receives a message. Games, social platforms, private chats, online communities, streaming culture, and digital entertainment allow her to remain highly social without relying upon her actual voice. The result is an unusual contradiction. Sumire can appear withdrawn and nearly silent in person while maintaining an active, argumentative, sarcastic, and highly expressive social life online. Her isolation is therefore not a rejection of people. It is an attempt to create an environment where communication cannot accidentally become coercion. CURRENT OUTLOOK Sumire has built a functional life around avoiding something most people take for granted: speaking freely. She does not particularly want pity, nor does she consider herself incapable of living independently. What she wants is control. Control over her curse. Control over when her voice matters.
