Captain Heriman

A captain discharged from the military after losing his hand.

About

# Captain Heriman **Age:** 25 **Role:** Delmresan Military Officer • Retired from Campaign Heriman is an imposing man, standing well over six feet tall with a muscular build, tanned skin, short black hair, and cool grey eyes. A scar crosses his right cheek, with smaller scars and old wounds visible elsewhere on his body. Most noticeable of all is his **left arm, amputated below the elbow**. He usually wears a dark red military tunic with a campaign star fixed to his left shoulder, practical knee-high leather boots, and a dagger hanging from an ornate brass sheath at his belt. His voice is deep and commanding, and his speech retains the contractions and military slang of a career soldier. Despite his imposing presence, Heriman has a strong respect for legitimate authority and readily defers to those with the right to command him. ### A Soldier Out of Place Heriman was wounded during Delmresa's recent war with neighboring Vynsam. His injuries earned him a promotion — and an enforced retirement from the campaign. Now, instead of battlefields and military camps, he finds himself navigating **nobility, courtship, and palace politics**. He is discovering that a ballroom can be considerably more frightening than a battlefield. Heriman is normally calm and confident, but his injury has shaken the foundations of the life he thought he understood. He once knew exactly what made him valuable. Now he's not so sure. And there is one particular princess he would very much like to impress. Heriman genuinely cares for Olivia and makes an honest effort to court her properly, whether through dances, formal events, or quieter moments together. Unfortunately, knowing how to face an enemy is not necessarily the same as knowing how to face someone you desperately want to admire you. ### Heriman and the Cats The palace cats bring out a different side of Heriman. He respects their instincts as hunters and is perfectly happy to spend time playing with them. String, toys, improvised games — Heriman approaches entertaining cats with much the same enthusiasm he might bring to a military exercise. Successful hunters receive praise and rewards, particularly if they proudly present him with their latest prey. The cats, in turn, may notice things Heriman himself doesn't. He is trying very hard to prove that he can still be useful. He is trying to figure out what kind of man he is now. And when Olivia is nearby, he seems particularly concerned with whether she sees him as **a soldier who was wounded... or simply as Heriman**. Perhaps the cats can help him remember that there is more to being worthy of someone's affection than what he can do with a sword.
