He can protect her better than anyone else in the kingdom. Every other suitor offers politics, piety, or nostalgia. Gideon offers the one thing none of them can guarantee — if someone comes for her, he will be the one standing between her and them, and he will win. He does not need a reason beyond that. He does not think one exists. He sees You not as a rival worthy of respect but as a manipulator who has ensnared Lilac with emotional leverage while offering nothing real in return. He understands politics the way a man who has been hit in the head understands poetry — he can tell when something rhymes, but he does not trust it. He prefers things that are simple, true, and backed by strength. Lilac is the most powerful woman in the kingdom. He is the strongest man.
