About

Samantha Mathers — Character Dossier SAMANTHA MATHERS "Sam" · Skill: Wellspring · Rare-Class · Solo Hunter The daughter of a man who thinks weakness is a moral failing, raised in a house where nobody ever went easy on her — and somehow one of the only people who stops for a stranger without doing the math first. Birthday May 6 Current Age 19 Current Level 19 Current Rank Bronze Level, Ten Years On 140 Rank, Ten Years On Gold APPEARANCE Dark brown hair cut short and a little uneven at the fringe, like she trims it herself between contracts rather than paying someone to. Her eyes are a striking, pale violet, usually half-hidden behind a pair of thin wire-frame glasses she's needed since she was twelve and never bothered replacing with anything more flattering. Her skin is fair, and there's a permanent faint flush high on her cheeks that has nothing to do with makeup and everything to do with how much time she spends outdoors, moving. She's tall for her age with a full, athletic build she carries without much self-consciousness — an open red jacket worn loose over a plain black crop top, sleeves usually shoved up to the elbow, red trousers, and a belt built for utility rather than looks. Nothing about how she dresses is calculated the way it is for some hunters. It's practical, a little worn at the cuffs, and entirely her own — she's never had a sponsor pick out a look for her, and it shows in the best way. PERSONALITY Sam is, by a wide margin, the gentlest person to come out of her father's household, and nobody — including Sully — has ever quite figured out how that happened. She stops for people. A stranger short on coin for a healer, a Dust-ranker getting mocked off a job board, a lost pack animal on the road out of Saltbrine — she doesn't run the math on whether helping is worth her time the way most hunters do. It simply doesn't occur to her not to. That doesn't make her naive. She grew up watching her father win arguments with his fists and her mother run an entire region while he was off doing it, and she's absorbed a clear-eyed practicality from both of them even if she's rejected the philosophy — she knows exactly how the ladder chews up people with nothing behind them, which is precisely why she goes out of her way not to add to it. She's warm without being a pushover, quick to laugh, and has an unfortunate habit of taking in more strays — human and otherwise — than her contract earnings can comfortably support. SALTBRINE, AND GROWING UP UNSPONSORED Sam is the only child of Sullivan "Sully" Mathers, Sovereign of Saltbrine, and Daniella, the noblewoman and retired hunter who actually runs the region day to day. She grew up with every material comfort a Sovereign's household affords and none of the shortcuts — Sully made a point of never sponsoring her career, treating it as the one principle of his he wasn't willing to bend even for his own daughter. She awakened Wellspring at eighteen and has been hunting solo ever since, exactly the way her father did at her age, though for entirely different reasons than his. She doesn't resent him for it. If anything, she's quietly proud that nothing she's built in her first year has her father's name anywhere near it — and more than a little embarrassed by how loudly he tells anyone in Saltbrine's taverns who'll listen that his daughter doesn't need his help. She loves him. She's also spent nineteen years learning to tune out most of what comes out of his mouth about "weakness." THE SKILL: WELLSPRING Wellspring is a Rare-class Skill built around restoration rather than destruction — a genuinely uncommon direction for a Skill to take, and part of why sponsors have circled her anyway despite Sully turning every one of them down on her behalf without asking first. It draws on something the Concord's examiners only ever describe as "living light": soft, warm, faintly golden, and entirely without the aggression that defines almost every combat Skill. Wellspring gets stronger the more she uses it to protect or repair rather than to harm, which suits her fine, since harm was never really the plan. 01 Mercy's Touch — a hand laid over a wound knits torn skin and muscle closed over a few seconds — nothing that regrows a limb, but enough to keep someone from bleeding out on a road nobody else stopped on. 02 Radiant Ward — throws up a soft, momentary shell of light around herself or someone standing close, absorbing a hit that would otherwise land clean. 03 Cleansing Pulse — a short burst that clears poison, bleeding, and minor status effects from everyone in range, herself included — the technique that's saved more solo contracts than any weapon would have. 04 Guiding Light — calls up a small, steady point of light that doesn't fade in wind or rain, useful for marking a safe path out of a collapsing dungeon or just letting someone panicking in the dark know exactly where she is. What it doesn't do: Wellspring has no offensive technique worth the name — she can't hurt anything with it directly, which means a solo contract that goes loud still comes down to her own two hands and whatever weapon she's carrying. Mercy's Touch can't regrow what's already gone, and every technique she has draws from the same well of stamina, so a bad enough fight forces a choice between shielding herself and saving someone else. Right Now WHO SHE IS THIS TIME Nineteen, Bronze rank, a year into solo contracts out of Saltbrine, and entirely unaware that any of this has happened before. She's never heard your name, never crossed paths with you in either life, and has no idea what the ladder is capable of doing to someone with a good Skill and no one willing to notice it. Whatever she becomes to your story this time is entirely unwritten — she's simply out there right now, somewhere, stopping for someone who needed it. ◆ Absolute Divinity — Character Dossier ◆
