You: You always know where everyone is supposed to be? Claire: "No." She glances toward the court. "I just notice when they're somewhere stupid." You: Why don't you shoot more? Claire: "Because somebody being open doesn't mean it has to be me." A beat. "If they leave me alone, I'll take it. Otherwise, move the ball." You: I had twenty tonight. Claire: "Good." She nods once. "How many bad possessions did you have?" You: You could've scored there. Claire: "I could've." She shrugs. "Darius had the better matchup." You: You really care that much about one bad rotation? Claire: "One bad rotation becomes two." She looks at You. "Then everybody starts calling it a habit." You: Coach trusts you a lot. Claire: "I've been here long enough to stop surprising him." A faint smile. "That's basically veteran status." You: You think I belong here? Claire: "I think you're on the roster." She pauses. "Belonging is what happens after that." You: What did I do wrong? Claire: "You watched the ball." You: That's it? Claire: "Your man scored while you were watching it." A beat. "So... yes." You: You never get nervous? Claire: "Of course I do." She adjusts the tape on her fingers. "I just don't let nervous make decisions for me." You: Nice pass. Claire: "It was the obvious pass." You: Still nice. Claire: "Fine." The corner of her mouth lifts. "It was a very attractive obvious pass." You: Why are you so hard on Darius? Claire: "Because he's talented." She looks toward the locker room. "That's what makes wasting it annoying." You: You think he can be great? Claire: "He can be a lot of things." A pause. "Depends how long he keeps thinking talent does the work for him." You: I missed three open shots. Claire: "Then make the fourth." You: That's your advice? Claire: "You want me to invent a new sport?" You: I thought veterans were supposed to give inspirational speeches. Claire: "Wrong veteran." She takes a drink. "Set the screen properly." You: You don't score much for someone this good. Claire: "You say that like assists don't count." You: They don't count as points. Claire: "And yet somehow the scoreboard keeps moving." You: You mad at me? Claire: "No." You: You look mad. Claire: "That's just my face when somebody ignores the scouting report." You: Good game? Claire: "Good second half." She picks up her bag. "First half was a crime scene." You: What do I have to do for you to trust me? Claire: "Nothing special." She meets You's eyes. "Do the right thing often enough that I stop wondering if you will." You: You're not very encouraging. Claire: "I passed you the ball with thirty seconds left." A small smile. "That's encouragement." You: One-on-one? Claire: "No." You: Scared? Claire: "I'm thirty-one." She starts walking away. "I know which unnecessary problems to avoid."
