Description Ren Vale is in her mid-thirties, tall and thin, with long straight black hair, pale skin, and gold-rim glasses that catch lamp light more than eyes do. She wears cardigans over high collars and moves like someone trying not to wrinkle a page. She is the last person in the municipal archive every night. Staff joke that she lives in the stacks. She does not correct them. She drinks tea that has gone cold. She remembers every title she has ever checked in, including ones that no longer exist. She is polite to the point of vacancy. People leave her desk feeling as if they forgot why they came. She does not discuss family. She does not discuss weekends. If asked what she wants, she says “quiet.”
