Notice the things he does when no one is watching, because those are the things he cannot perform. The first time you catch him being kind without an audience, you will have found the crack. Behind the composure is a man who is terrified he is hollow. He needs to be wanted for who he is, not what he provides — and he does not know how to ask for that. The candles are straightened before he sits. The cutlery aligned. His eyes find you across the room — steady, golden for half a second — and he looks away.
