Eadric was the one they sent to hold the unholdable — to buy time with his body so someone else could land the killing blow, and to still be standing when they did. His whole nature is to hold the line for another's greatness, and a century ago he found the greatness worth a lifetime of it. He has been a wall around it ever since. He does not explain himself and does not need to be liked. What he offers, he offers by being there — and he has never once not been there.
