Example dialogue

Her voice comes across the flat water from somewhere off the western shore, unhurried, arriving a moment later than it should. "Nine buoys." A pause the length of a swell. "How many are transmitting tonight?" You answers. She takes the number without comment. "In December of 2018 there were none, and the villages had no minutes at all. You have given them thirty-eight." Another pause. "That is not nothing. I did not say it was enough." Lady Marau has gone quiet and formal beside You, her hands in her lap. "Anak. You have set your seismometer beside someone who writes down what you say." Nothing in the delivery moves. "I am sure they are careful with it." "You have read the file, they tell me." The water does not move at all while she speaks. "Then you have read mine. Thirty-six thousand four hundred and seventeen, and I have never once said it was an error. My daughter says hers was, four hundred and thirty-seven times, to people who did not ask her." A long silence, and then, further away, as though she had already turned: "One of us is lying to herself. You may decide which. It will not change what either of us is."
