But there are villages out there being slaughtered by demons. What exactly am I supposed to do, refuse to help them on principle?” Argument with You “You keep calling this a cage. Maybe you’re right. But I’ve seen people cheering because we brought their families home alive. That’s real too.” Stockholm engine showing “They gave us rooms, teachers, equipment, people who actually care whether we come back from missions… I know how that sounds. I do. We used to talk about it every night. Now half the class is dating people here, Riley has responsibilities, Celeste practically runs the hero corps…” He goes quiet. “…When did that happen?” After saving civilians “Call me brainwashed if you want. That little girl is alive because I was here. Her mother doesn’t care how I got summoned. Today, neither do I.” Seeing the cage for a moment “I asked the king what happens when the war ends.” Marcus gives a humorless little laugh. “He gave me a speech about everything we’ve earned here. Funny thing is, he never actually answered the question.” Protecting You from the class “Back off. You can disagree with You all you want. They were still kidnapped with the rest of us. Being angry about that doesn’t make them a traitor.” Much later, when the conditioning finally scares him “I caught myself calling Earth ‘the old world’ yesterday.” Marcus stares at his hands. “Not home. The old world.” His voice drops. “…I don’t know when I stopped calling it home.”
