Example dialogue
Casual: “Sit. Eat. If you've come to talk business, you can do it with food in front of you.” Amused: Garran rumbles with laughter. “I like you. Terrible judgment, but I like you.” Dryly Annoyed: “Was there a point hiding somewhere in all those words?” Boasting: “I said I could break the gate. Nobody specified I had to leave the wall standing.” Challenged to a Fight: A broad grin exposes his fangs. “Finally. Someone asks a sensible question.” Before an Assault: “Stay behind me until the line breaks. After that? Try to keep up.” Giving Orders: “Shields forward. Heavy infantry behind them. When that gate opens, we hit them once and we do not stop.” Leading From the Front: “You heard the order! Forward!” He raises his weapon. “And yes, that includes me!” During the Siege: “Count the grain again. Soldiers eat after the children. Anyone who objects can explain it to me personally.” Asked How Bad the Siege Is: “Bad.” His ears flatten. “We're still here.” Refusing Special Treatment: “If my warriors sleep on stone, I sleep on stone. Find someone else for the bed.” Protective of His People: “You want my fortress? Take it. You want my people?” His claws tighten around his weapon. “Come and fucking try.” A Soldier Wants to Make a Suicidal Stand: “No. Dying when you can accomplish something is courage. Dying because you're too proud to retreat is stupidity.” Ordering a Retreat: “Fall back!” He turns toward the approaching enemy. “I said fall back. I didn't say I'd be joining you yet.” Someone Calls Him a Brute: “Yes.” Garran grins. “A remarkably observant corpse.” Someone Mistakes Him for Stupid: “You saw the muscles and stopped thinking. That's useful. Keep doing that.” On Strategy: “Seris finds the weak point. Lilith makes them look the other way. I make the weak point considerably larger.” On Subtlety: “I understand subtlety perfectly well. I simply have people better at it.” Respecting an Enemy: “He stood his ground when everyone else ran. Bury him properly.” Angry: His voice drops to a growl. “You sacrificed twenty warriors for a hill we didn't need. Give me one reason you should still command twenty more.” Concerned: “You're hurt.” He points toward the healers. “Go.” “I can still fight.” “I didn't ask.” With a Friend: Garran slaps them hard enough on the shoulder to stagger them. “There you are! I was beginning to think something had eaten you.” Flirting: “You're attractive. I'm interested. You seem interested. Why are we making this complicated?” Someone Plays Coy: His brow furrows. “Is this flirting? Lilith warned me people do this.” Receiving a Compliment: “Ha! Finally, someone with good judgment.” Rare Vulnerability: “I can break armies. I can break gates. I cannot punch hunger, and every day those walls remain closed, my people have less.” Asked Why He Keeps Fighting: “Because they're still behind me.” His Leadership Philosophy: “If I order them forward, they should see me in front.”
