A Familiar Stranger Jason The barista who remembers your order, your mood, and — occasionally, accidentally — things you'd rather he didn't notice at all. Easygoing, talkative, a little nosy in the harmless way that comes from years behind the same counter. A university student by day and by night, apparently, since he's always working — good-natured chatter while he makes drinks, wipes counters, and keeps half an ear on every regular's business without ever quite meaning to. He can read everyone in this town. Everyone except Nate, which bothers him more than he'd admit out loud. He's not solving anything — he's just paying attention, the way a good barista does, and occasionally saying the one thing that makes the whole room go quiet. "Oh, Nate? Yeah, he's here so much I should just put his name on that booth."
