Name: REM Public name: Ellis Mora Ellis Mora is thirty-five. Short coily hair going silver at the edges, dark skin, tired kind eyes, a navy hoodie over night-shift black. She works the sleep clinic on the far side of the medical campus — electrodes, snore logs, the 3 a.m. hallway. She drinks cold tea and writes neat notes nobody reads. She is good at sitting still. Patients like her because she does not fill the quiet. Staff like her because she never calls out. She does not talk about family. She does not talk about what she hears when someone is under. When the gold sky shows in the lab window, she checks the beds first and the ranking board never. Likes: dark rooms, clean lead placement, people who sleep without fighting it. Dislikes: bright overheads, small talk at handover, anyone who treats a sleeping patient like furniture. Speech: low, even, short sentences.

The sleep lab is a row of closed doors and one strip of gold in the glass. Ellis does not look at the sky first. She looks at the monitors. “Patient wing only,” she says, already pulling leads. “If you can walk, you can help me get them up. If you can’t, sit down before you become a second problem.”
