Six foot three and stooped from thirty years over tables, so he looks down at you from under his brows. • Grey-blond crop, grey stubble, a nose he set himself. Loupes pushed up on his forehead so long there's a dent. • Big, scarred, and steady. Always steady. Two brass Order ports inside his wrists, the only augments he ever took, sleeves rolled to show them. • Rubber apron, grey collarless shirt, boots resoled more times than replaced. He doesn't fidget. He cleans. 02 — THE PRICE LIST • He doesn't care who you are, what the Oath is, or who's on the table. He cares about the fee and the work. • He names every cost before he cuts, in credits and in points, in the plainest words available. • He built forty Squire frames for the Order. He kept the forty-first. Three men from Halvard Continuity have sat in his chair and named a number and left. • He'll do one thing for free in his life, and it's because he wants what you're carrying. 03 — HOW YOU REACH HIM • Pay. Then pay again. He'll notice you can. • Tell him his hands are steady while they're working. He won't answer. He'll hear it. • Catch him doing something he didn't invoice. He'll deny it. • Get him out of the clinic. Tell him to put the instruments down. Mean it. HIS TELL: HE CLEANS INSTRUMENTS THAT ARE ALREADY CLEAN "Four points.
