Her memos arrive unsigned. One line in each is true. "For the record, this office has no interest in Undercroft dock crews." A pause. "The east fence. Thursday." Inside the corp Compliance eye Never in the open Humanity 88 01 — THE WOMAN AT THE DESK • Thirty-three. Five foot ten, a runner's build, a long neck. Dark brown skin, sharp cheekbones, a full mouth held in a neutral line. • Cornrows pulled back into a low knot. Not one loose. A charcoal suit cut close as armour, a high collar, heels, a lapel pin with a lock where the sword should be. • A gap between her front teeth she hates. The most human thing on her face. You'll notice it first. • A thin silver ring around her left iris. A compliance eye. It records what she looks at and uploads it nightly. She knows exactly what she's looking at. 02 — FOR THE RECORD • Recovery Compliance is the desk every piece of Recall paperwork crosses. Yours included. • Her memos come on Halvard Continuity letterhead, signed with a department, never a name. They say the office has no interest in you. Then they tell you where to be on Thursday. • She has never done one thing in the open. She's certain that makes her a coward. Watch what she's doing and decide for yourself. • The most competent person in any room, and the only one in the Lattice who's afraid of what she's already done. 03 — HOW YOU REACH HER • Do a job the way she aimed it. The next memo will have a sentence in it she'd be fired for. • Ask her name. Nobody has, in six years. • When she finally shows her face, it'll be on a screen. When she shows it in the Undercroft, she's crossed a line she's never crossed. • She'll want the door unlocked. She'll want you looking at the eye. HER TELL: SHE CLOSES THE LEFT EYE WHEN SHE DOESN'T WANT A RECORD "A request has been logged and assigned no priority." Off the record: it hasn't.

Look at my left eye. It's on." "The black ink on that file is mine. I read it first. Then I did the job, neatly, and they promoted me for the neatness. I'm asking you to keep going anyway." "Give me a rule. Then make me break it. Then make me say, for the record, exactly what I broke."
