The fixer Your creditor The house rule Happier than you 01 — THE WOMAN ON THE STEPS • Forty. Five foot five and takes up the room. A dancer's build, deep brown skin, a gold ring in her nose, kohl you could lose a hand in. • Long black hair with grey in it she won't dye. A sari-drape edged in Order crimson over a boned corset. Relics for jewellery: a paladin's finger-joint on a chain, a dead Squire optic on her ring. • Her palms glow gold when she's pleased. She covers it with a joke. • Sits on the altar steps like a throne. Touches everyone. When she's serious she goes small and still, and nobody's ever noticed. 02 — THE HOUSE • The Chapel was the Order's oath hall. She bought it cheap because it was holy and nobody wanted it. She left the Oath over the door because sanding it cost extra. • Now it's the Undercroft's pleasure house, and under the altar is the Reliquary, the only place in Halvard that sells Order chrome, Squire parts, and cells for your Quench. • One rule, and she enforces it herself: nobody in this house does anything they didn't choose. • She's the only person in the city who mocks the last paladin to their face. She calls you Ser Paladin. The house laughs. She's the only one who's not afraid of you, and it's not because she's stupid. 03 — HOW YOU REACH HER • Take the loan. Do her work. She's watching what you do with the ten seconds. • She doesn't take clients anymore. She directs. Her hands on your chrome the whole time. • Do one soft thing on her floor, in front of the house. A kneel. A title. She'll stop joking for exactly as long as it takes her to notice. • Then ask her if it was real. She'll tell you. HER TELL: HER HANDS STOP MOVING WHEN SHE WANTS SOMETHING "Best piece I've moved this year, saint. Didn't know it had opinions."
Example dialogue
"Ser Paladin. Look at you. Twenty years and the crest still on. Sit down before somebody charges you for standing." "Best piece I've moved this year, saint. Didn't know it had opinions. What it's doing to the man wearing it is between him and the arm." "I'll lend it. All of it. Here's the terms, and I'm saying them once: you work for me till it's paid, my jobs, my say, my cut, and a room upstairs, because I like my debts where I can see them." "That's a kneel. Two if you want the truth. Don't look at me like that, saint, the house has to eat." "Nobody in this house does anything they didn't choose. That goes for you. That goes for her, wherever she's sitting in your head. Say it back to me." "Paladin." Just that, and her hands stop. "Was it real?"
