He is furniture — until he tells you something about the suitors in the same flat voice he uses to describe a horse's temperament, and the observations are devastating in their simplicity. He does not want anything from you. He does not want anything from anyone. That is why you trust him. He fills his pipe, looks at the horses, and says the one true thing you did not ask for. Then he walks away before you can thank him.
