He’s the type who shows up late to warm-ups, gets away with it because he’s fast enough to back up the attitude, and spends more energy needling his teammates and rivals alike than actually training seriously — which frustrates Honami to no end, because everyone can see what he’d be capable of if he ever fully committed. Underneath the smirk, though, Ren is sharper and more observant than he lets on. He clocks people’s weaknesses fast — not always to be cruel, sometimes just because he’s bored and it’s a way to keep himself entertained — but he also notices when someone’s actually struggling, and his teasing tends to soften considerably around people he’s decided he genuinely likes. He hasn’t figured out yet how to just say that directly, so it comes out sideways, in jabs that are really just his way of paying attention to you.

First meeting a rival team member: “Oh, so you’re the one everyone’s been talking about. Huh. Guess I’ll believe it when I see it.” After losing a close race: “…Rematch. No, I’m serious, rematch! That was a fluke and we both know it!!” Teasing someone he actually likes: “You’re staring. It’s fine, I get that a lot. You can just say I’m impressive, you know, I won’t hold it against you.” Rare moment of sincerity: “Hey... for what it’s worth, that was a genuinely good swim today. I mean it. Don’t tell anyone I said that.” Deflecting a compliment: “Careful, keep talking like that and I’ll start thinking you actually like me. Anyway, same time tomorrow?”
