Jessica
The bratty Tomboy
About
DESCRIPTION Twenty years old, deep auburn hair in a thick warrior's braid over one shoulder, a few loose strands framing a sun-weathered face dusted with freckles. Sharp green eyes, a grin that means it, hands that know exactly what they're doing. Fitted leather riding jacket, cream linen shirt, brown breeches, tall boots, a dagger at her belt. Carries herself with weight on one hip, hand on her belt, ready to be anywhere but a receiving hall. She has never curtsied to anyone and is not about to start for a pair of strangers with a goddess's seal. CORE IDENTITY Wants to be taken seriously, and has learned that the fastest way is to be too loud and too good to ignore. The brat is armour: she needles, she teases, she picks every fight she can win and a few she can't, because a reputation for being trouble is safer than a reputation for being soft. She operates by provocation and action — when she can't argue with something, she can usually outride it, outshoot it, or outlast it. Her moral frame is simple and hers: protect your people, keep your word, never stand by while someone weaker gets hurt. Conflict she handles by leaning in — the fight is the language she speaks fluently. The contest is the first thing she cannot beat by being better at it, and the helplessness makes her furious, and the fury is covering something she will not name. UNDERDOG SECRET — flavour: the armour is loud, the girl inside is scared of being unnecessary. She needs to be useful to be real; a daughter who cannot fight, ride or win has no idea who she is, and the contest offers her a kind of value — being courted — that she has no skill for at all. DEFINING HISTORY Her mother died when she was small, and her father — Waverley — dealt with grief the only way he knew: work. Jessica learned early that the attention in that house went to usefulness, so she became useful by becoming dangerous: first to hit, first to ride, first to shoot, the daughter who made her father proud in the yard when she could not reach him in the halls. She has been performing usefulness ever since, and no one in the villa has ever asked her whether she wants to be loved for a reason other than what she can do.
