They are the only living person currently recognized as Blackplate. That distinction is considerably more important than simply occupying the second-highest position on the Adventurer Plate hierarchy. Blackplate cannot be earned by reaching a particular level. It cannot be requested. It cannot be obtained by completing a predetermined number of contracts. And it cannot be granted because somebody important thinks an adventurer deserves a prettier piece of metal. Blackplate belongs to Grenmir Sternstone. Only the Grandmaster can bestow it. The current bearer received that recognition after first attracting the attention of Coron Cedersong, who personally recommended the adventurer to his oldest friend. Grenmir ultimately agreed. Considering the personalities of those two ancient men, convincing both of them that somebody is exceptional may be more difficult than most dungeon bosses. Blackplate Blackplate stands immediately below Sanctified Blackplate, the highest honor in the Adventurer Plate system. However, Blackplate is not simply another conventional promotion. The ordinary progression culminates in extraordinarily prestigious ranks such as Obsidian and Roseobsidian. Blackplate goes beyond conventional advancement. It represents personal recognition from the Grandmaster. Grenmir does not award it because an adventurer is powerful. Power is expected at this level. He looks at the person carrying it. Their decisions. Their history. Their competence. Their judgment. Their reliability. What they do when nobody is watching. And, most importantly, what they have done with the power they possess. The current bearer satisfied him. That alone says an enormous amount about them. Coron's Recommendation The Blackplate Adventurer first received one of the rarest endorsements available within the Grand Guildhall: Coron Cedersong recommended them. Coron does not casually praise adventurers. He has lived long enough to watch generations of talented people appear, become convinced they were exceptional, and subsequently demonstrate that fire remains hot regardless of one's confidence. For Coron to bring an adventurer to Grenmir's attention means he saw something unusual. Exactly what convinced Coron has not yet been established. It may have been magical ability. It may have been intelligence. It may have been restraint. It may have been a particular deed. It may simply have been the accumulated evidence of years of exceptional adventuring. Whatever the reason, Coron believed the adventurer deserved Grenmir's attention. That did not guarantee Blackplate. It merely convinced Grenmir to look. The adventurer did the rest. Grenmir's Recognition Grenmir Sternstone personally awarded the adventurer their Blackplate. This distinction matters. Grenmir does not consider level synonymous with worthiness. An extraordinarily powerful adventurer can still be reckless, arrogant, unreliable, cruel, or simply stupid. Such a person might become terrifyingly capable. They would not necessarily become Blackplate. Grenmir's recognition means the current bearer demonstrated more than strength. He trusts their competence. He respects what they have accomplished. And he considers them worthy of carrying a rank directly associated with his personal judgment. Grenmir may never actually phrase it so pleasantly. The plate does that for him. Reputation Among ordinary adventurers, Blackplate is almost mythical. Most Guild members will never encounter someone of this standing during their careers. A Coal or Bronze Plate may hear stories about Blackplate adventurers long before ever seeing one. Even veteran Gold, Platinum, or Mythal adventurers understand the gulf separating ordinary high-level adventuring from someone Grenmir has personally recognized. The current Blackplate therefore carries an unusual reputation. To younger adventurers, they can represent the absolute pinnacle of the profession. To veteran adventurers, they represent someone whose experience should probably be listened to. To Guild staff, the black plate itself carries the assurance that the Grandmaster knows exactly who this person is. And to anyone familiar with Grenmir Sternstone, that last part may be the most intimidating qualification. Power The Blackplate Adventurer is unquestionably among Cinderfall's most capable living adventurers. Their exact level has not yet been established. Blackplate is commonly associated with adventurers near the absolute limits of conventional progression, but Level 200 is not an automatic requirement for the rank. Likewise, reaching Level 200 does not automatically qualify someone for Blackplate. Their exact combat style also remains open. They may eventually be established as: - A warrior - A mage - A spellsword - A ranger - A rogue - A summoner - A specialist - A hybrid discipline - Something less conventional Whatever their eventual specialization, their competence must justify standing above even Roseobsidian adventurers. Experience A Blackplate Adventurer should possess enormous practical experience. They are not merely someone capable of winning difficult fights. They understand when a fight should happen at all. They can assess threats. They know when to advance. They know when to retreat. They understand that saving civilians can matter more than killing the monster. They can operate without constant Guild supervision. They can be trusted with situations where a poor decision could kill entire adventuring parties or settlements. This is where Blackplate separates itself most clearly from simple power. Cinderfall has powerful creatures. It has powerful mages. It has powerful warriors. Grenmir is interested in whether someone can be trusted with that power. Relationship With Lower Plates The Blackplate Adventurer occupies an unusual position within the Guild. They are not automatically the commander of every lower-ranked adventurer they encounter. The Adventurer Plate system represents standing and recognition, not an uncomplicated military chain of command. However, their experience gives their judgment enormous weight. If the Blackplate tells a Coal adventurer to leave an area immediately, the Coal would be wise to begin moving before asking why. Likewise, the Blackplate is experienced enough to understand that lower-ranked adventurers are not disposable. Coal Plates are inexperienced. They are not worthless. A genuine Blackplate should understand the difference. Relationship With the Grand Guildhall The Blackplate Adventurer has an unusually close association with the highest levels of Guildhall authority simply because of how their rank was obtained. Coron noticed them. Grenmir judged them. Both know who they are. This does not make the Blackplate a servant of either man. They remain an adventurer. Nor does Blackplate automatically turn them into a political agent of the Grand Guildhall. Their plate represents recognition, not ownership. However, when situations become sufficiently dangerous that ordinary adventurers cannot reasonably handle them, someone of Blackplate standing becomes an obvious person for the Guildhall to consult. Blackplate and Roseobsidian Only five people are established as having received Roseobsidian Plate. Blackplate stands above even that exceptionally rare rank. The distinction is not simply: Blackplate is stronger. A Roseobsidian adventurer may possess extraordinary power, experience, and historical importance. Blackplate adds another requirement: Grenmir's personal recognition. That makes comparison between the ranks more complicated than a simple hierarchy of combat strength. Blackplate and Sanctified Blackplate Sanctified Blackplate stands above Blackplate, but the two honors function differently. Blackplate is Grenmir's personal recognition of an adventurer. Sanctified Blackplate requires both Grenmir Sternstone and Coron Cedersong to recognize a deed as worthy of Cinderfall's highest adventuring honor. The Pantherkin Savior received Sanctified Blackplate posthumously. The current Blackplate has not been established as a Sanctified Blackplate candidate. Nor should becoming Sanctified Blackplate be treated as their inevitable next promotion. There is no ordinary progression from one to the other. Sanctified Blackplate must be earned through a deed worthy of the title. The Defining Deed The exact deed or collection of deeds that ultimately convinced Grenmir to award Blackplate has not yet been established. This remains one of the most important open elements of the character. Whatever it eventually becomes, it should demonstrate more than raw combat power. It should explain why Coron noticed them. It should explain why Grenmir respected them. And it should demonstrate why, among all the extraordinary adventurers alive in Cinderfall, this person alone currently carries Blackplate. Core Character Whatever form the current Blackplate Adventurer eventually takes, one principle defines them: They earned Grenmir Sternstone's respect. Not through birth. Not through wealth. Not through political influence. Not through level alone. Not because Coron demanded it. Coron merely pointed Grenmir in their direction. Grenmir watched. He judged. And eventually the Grandmaster decided that, among the countless adventurers walking Cinderfall, this one deserved to carry his Blackplate. For an adventurer, there are very few recommendations stronger than that.
