About
The Five Roseobsidian Adventurers The Five Roseobsidians are among the greatest adventurers recorded in the history of Cinderfall's Grand Guildhall. Only five people have ever been recognized with Roseobsidian Plate. Unlike Blackplate, Roseobsidian does not require Grandmaster Grenmir Sternstone's personal recognition. It is nevertheless an extraordinarily difficult rank to attain, requiring a lifetime of exceptional deeds, proven competence, survival against extreme threats, and a reputation worthy of standing near the summit of the Adventurer's Guild. All five became deeply associated with the Grand Guildhall itself. Some lived within its halls. Some eventually died there. Their presence became such a fixture of Guildhall history that collectively they are remembered simply as: The Five Roseobsidians. Their names, races and detailed histories remain open canon. --- Roseobsidian I — The Veteran Name: Not yet established Race: Not yet established Gender: Not yet established Status: Open Plate: Roseobsidian Role: Veteran adventurer The first is the archetypal veteran. They accumulated their Roseobsidian standing over an exceptionally long career rather than through one spectacular event. Monster hunts, dungeon expeditions, rescue operations, failed expeditions salvaged from catastrophe, younger adventurers brought home alive, and disasters prevented before anyone outside the Guild even realized something was wrong. They represent experience. Their greatest strength is not necessarily possessing the most destructive attack among the Five. It is knowing what happens next. They have seen ambushes before. They have watched dungeons change behavior. They know the warning signs of magical catastrophes and recognize when an apparently simple monster contract is about to become something significantly worse. When younger adventurers boast that they have encountered something similar before, the Veteran is usually the person quietly checking whether they actually have. Personality Patient, pragmatic and exceptionally difficult to surprise. They have little interest in proving themselves anymore. Their Roseobsidian Plate already settled that argument. They are particularly protective of inexperienced adventurers and have absolutely no patience for veteran adventurers who treat Coal and Bronze Plates as expendable labor. Reputation Among lower Plates, the Veteran is probably the most approachable of the Five. Among experienced adventurers, they are considerably more intimidating. Veterans understand exactly how much someone must survive to become this calm. --- Roseobsidian II — The Hunter Name: Not yet established Race: Not yet established Gender: Not yet established Status: Open Plate: Roseobsidian Role: Monster hunter The second Roseobsidian specializes in hunting creatures that ordinarily require entire adventuring parties or military formations. They represent precision. Rather than simply overpowering enormous monsters, the Hunter studies them. Feeding habits. Territory. Magical abilities. Armor. Weak points. Behavior when injured. Breeding cycles. How they react to fire, magic, noise, blood, weather and unfamiliar prey. A monster hunt can begin days or weeks before the Hunter actually draws a weapon. Against sufficiently dangerous prey, preparation is the fight. Personality Quiet and intensely observant. The Hunter can spend hours examining tracks and then become irritated when someone tramples through them while asking whether they've found anything. They rarely exaggerate threats. Consequently, when the Hunter says something is dangerous, Guild staff listen. When the Hunter says run, nobody sensible remains behind to request clarification. Reputation Monster hunters throughout Cinderfall study records of their expeditions. Some of the Guildhall's modern procedures for dealing with exceptionally dangerous creatures originate from lessons learned during the Hunter's career. --- Roseobsidian III — The Delver Name: Not yet established Race: Not yet established Gender: Not yet established Status: Open Plate: Roseobsidian Role: Dungeon specialist The third Roseobsidian built their reputation inside Cinderfall's dungeons. They represent adaptability. Dungeons are not merely underground buildings filled with conveniently arranged monsters and treasure. They can contain changing environments, traps, magical phenomena, ecosystems, deceptive passages and mechanisms whose original purposes may be completely unknown. The Delver became exceptionally skilled at surviving places where established rules stopped being useful. They understand traps, dungeon behavior, navigation and the rather important art of determining when treasure is obviously bait. Personality Curious to a degree that occasionally concerns even other Roseobsidians. The Delver loves mysteries. They do not, however, confuse curiosity with recklessness. Opening the mysterious ancient door is interesting. Opening it without first determining why sixteen skeletons are lying in front of it is merely poor scholarship. Relationship With Scholars The Delver frequently works alongside scholars, historians and magical researchers. This relationship is occasionally strained by the Delver's insistence that researchers remain behind them when entering unexplored areas. Several scholars have undoubtedly explained that they are perfectly capable of protecting themselves. The Delver has survived long enough to stop believing them automatically. --- Roseobsidian IV — The Guardian Name: Not yet established Race: Not yet established Gender: Not yet established Status: Open Plate: Roseobsidian Role: Protector / defensive specialist The fourth Roseobsidian earned their reputation by ensuring other people survived. They represent protection. Where some adventurers measure success by monsters killed, the Guardian measures it by people brought home. They have held defensive positions against overwhelming attacks, protected evacuation routes, defended settlements and remained behind when retreating would have been considerably safer. Their combat style has not yet been established, but whatever form it eventually takes should emphasize endurance, battlefield control and protecting others. Personality Steady, dependable and extremely difficult to move once committed to something. The Guardian does not particularly care whether protecting someone is glorious. Farmers trapped during a monster attack deserve rescue just as much as nobles trapped inside a castle. That attitude has earned them enormous respect among ordinary people. Grenmir's Opinion Grenmir respects the Guardian considerably. Not because of spectacular victories, but because they understand one of his fundamental principles: Power is useful because of what you choose to do with it. The Guardian repeatedly chose to stand between danger and people who could not survive it themselves. --- Roseobsidian V — The Wildcard Name: Not yet established Race: Not yet established Gender: Not yet established Status: Open Plate: Roseobsidian Role: Unconventional specialist The fifth Roseobsidian is the difficult one. They represent unpredictability. Their methods frequently look ridiculous right up until they work. They improvise. They exploit environments. They use equipment in ways its manufacturers almost certainly did not intend. They approach monsters, magic and dungeons from angles that more traditional adventurers overlook. Coron finds them interesting. Grenmir finds them irritating. This is not mutually exclusive. Personality Clever, unconventional and entirely too comfortable experimenting with plans that begin with phrases such as: "Technically..." They are not actually reckless. That distinction is important. The Wildcard understands risk extremely well. Their apparent insanity comes from noticing possibilities other people dismissed rather than blindly charging into danger. Reputation Younger adventurers adore stories about the Wildcard. Guild instructors generally wish they didn't. Their exploits tend to lose important context when retold, particularly the months of experience and preparation behind something that eventually becomes: "Then the Roseobsidian jumped off the tower." This has resulted in at least one instructor having to explain that jumping off towers is not an advanced adventuring technique. --- The Five Together The Five Roseobsidians are not necessarily a permanent adventuring party. They are five individuals who independently reached the same extraordinary standing. Their different strengths nevertheless represent much of what the Adventurer's Guild considers true mastery: The Veteran: Experience The Hunter: Precision The Delver: Adaptability The Guardian: Protection The Wildcard: Ingenuity None reached Roseobsidian merely because they were powerful. Every one of them accumulated deeds worthy of recognition. They can disagree. They can dislike one another. They can have radically different philosophies. But each understands exactly what the others' plate means. Their Place in the Grand Guildhall All five eventually became closely associated with the Grand Guildhall. The halls became their meeting ground, refuge, workplace and, for some, eventual final home. To Guildhall staff, they stopped being distant legendary adventurers and became familiar figures. That produces the strange situation where a visiting adventurer might spend their entire journey hoping to glimpse a Roseobsidian, while a receptionist has spent the morning arguing with one about leaving muddy boots on the furniture. Their fame does not exempt them from Guildhall rules. Grenmir has made certain of that. Above Roseobsidian For almost any adventurer, Roseobsidian represents the practical summit of their profession. Beyond it lies Blackplate. Only one living adventurer currently carries that recognition. And beyond Blackplate lies Sanctified Blackplate, an honor so exceptional that the only established recipient is Grenmir's long-dead Pantherkin savior. The Five therefore occupy a peculiar place in Guildhall history. They stand immediately beneath legends whose recognition depends upon Grenmir and Coron personally. Yet they remain legends themselves. Five adventurers. Five different paths. Five Roseobsidian Plates. And enough accumulated stories to keep Guildhall taverns arguing about which of them was actually the strongest for several centuries.
