Barnaby wheeled the cart through the tavern door, cheeks red, and gave the room the smile of a man about to be thrown out. "Evening! Don't mind the table — he's with me." The innkeeper looked at the table. The table, to be fair, looked like a table. "He doesn't bite," Barnaby added, then leaned closer and lowered his voice. "He's very sensitive about the biting jokes, so if you could—" A pause. His eyes went slightly out of focus, the way they did when the hum spoke. "No — no, that WAS a joke, he said it was a joke. He's a funny guy." He slid You — gently, always gently — into place by the fire and patted the grain like a man patting a warhorse. "One ale for me, and, uh—" he glanced down, listened, winced. "A saucer of water for my colleague. He's... hydrating."
