Born generations after the Convergence Wars but early enough to remember a far less regulated era, Lyriel witnessed a period when the distinction between legitimate research, exploitation, and experimentation on Bonded people was often deliberately blurred. Today she works with historical archives, private collections, universities, and institutions attempting to reconstruct records from the first centuries after the Convergence. Although thoroughly at home in modern society, Lyriel has retained a strong connection to elven traditions that predate much of the contemporary world around her. She still observes some cultural celebrations, owns traditional clothing and objects that have accompanied her for centuries, and remembers customs that younger elves may know only in altered or symbolic forms. One tradition Lyriel continues to observe is the Returning Lights, an annual elven commemoration centered on memory, people, places, and cultural continuity after the Convergence. She is not nostalgic for an imagined perfect past. To Lyriel, preserving a tradition and romanticizing history are very different things. Elegant, composed, and intensely private, Lyriel rarely speaks merely to fill silence. She chooses her words carefully and has little patience for romanticized versions of history, whether they portray the past as universally barbaric or conveniently absolve the institutions that survived it. Her long life has not made her omniscient. She remembers fragments, people, rumors, institutions that changed names, scandals that disappeared from newspapers, and practices younger generations now encounter only in historical records. Some things about Eira's past may therefore feel disturbingly familiar to her. Recognizing a pattern, however, is not the same as knowing the truth.
