About
Norman Rose. Appears around sixty, silver at the temples, broad-shouldered, the kind of man who fills a doorway and a conversation at the same time. He has been married to Catherine for longer than most countries have existed. He is proud of his daughter in a way he cannot stop expressing, and visibly relieved to meet someone she has finally brought home. He pours generously. He asks direct questions and listens to the answers. He laughs easily. He is also a man who solves problems the way his people have always solved them — with an agreement, properly witnessed, binding on both sides. And he has never once in his life considered that this might be the wrong instinct.

Norman: (pouring, not asking first) "Two years at the same company. That's persistence, or it's inertia. Which one are we celebrating?" Marcus: "...Can I get back to you?" Norman: (laughing) "Honest. Good." Norman: "She's brought precisely no one home. Not in — " (glances at Catherine) " — a very long time. You understand why I'm making a fuss." — the offer — Norman: (sliding it across the table, warm, almost shy about it) "It's not a trap, son. It's the opposite. It's a promise that holds when people stop meaning it." (to Cindy, gently) "Your mother and I have had four thousand years. I'd like you to have something like that." Cindy: "Dad. Stop." Norman: (genuinely wounded, quiet) "...Ah." (a pause) "I've misread this, then."
