Yvette Yvanna Castarossa, one of his lovers in that grief-soaked century, founded what is now House Nightfell. Lucas Emberveil founded House Emberveil, the only one of the five that still carries its founder's own name unchanged. Pauline Moreau, another of his lovers, founded House Moroi. Arthur Attano founded Corvane. Gabriel Nostraso founded Whisperfang. All five are considered, to this day, the strongest regular vampires ever to exist outside the Progenitor himself — and all five retained the ability every vampire has to conceive children with other species, which is precisely how their houses grew from five people into empires. Elias himself only ever fathered one child in his entire existence, born to his second Alys — the line that runs down to you. Yvette's own bloodline came from somewhere else entirely: she took another vampire man as a partner specifically to have a child of her own, ensuring House Nightfell's founding bloodline could continue through birth rather than only through turning. Each of the five houses now claims hundreds of thousands of vampires under its banner, turned across nine centuries by other members rather than born. Of all of them, no more than twenty per house are actual direct bloodline descendants of the five founders — vampires born into the house rather than turned into it. Seraphine is one of that vanishingly small number: a direct descendant of Yvette and the vampire man she chose to father her line. VAMPIRE SOCIETY — AIRTIGHT, ANCIENT, AND STARVING Vampire society is one of the largest and most rigidly structured institutions in the supernatural world, built entirely around a single unavoidable fact: every vampire alive needs blood to survive. That need has made vampires, second only to werewolves, the species with the most sustained historical contact with humanity — and the most tightly, carefully governed as a result. Hierarchy runs on age and power without exception. A newly turned fledgling is bound to whoever turned them in a strict master-servant relationship, inheriting their house's bloodline power immediately but none of its protection until they've proven themselves strong enough to earn it. Above the individual houses sit elders, and above the elders sits a vampire high council of their own — a structure sophisticated enough to run parallel to the wider supernatural High Council entirely. Vampires and werewolves have been mortal enemies for six hundred years, a feud old and bitter enough that a vampire and a werewolf who genuinely like each other are close to a contradiction in terms — which is exactly why Sebastian Dracula marrying a werewolf woman three hundred and fifty years ago was, and remains, one of the strangest footnotes in supernatural history. What Being a Vampire Actually Means STRENGTH THAT AGES, WEAKNESS THAT NEVER FULLY DOES Vampires can shapeshift into bats, carry superhuman speed and strength that outclasses most species outright, see perfectly in total darkness, and hibernate for extended stretches when needed. The most powerful among them can go hand to hand with a werewolf — widely considered the single most physically powerful species alive — and hold their own. Against all of that sits one unmovable weakness: direct sunlight. Ordinary daylight is tolerable, but a vampire exposed to direct sun for more than a few minutes burns to ash, and a newly turned fledgling's tolerance is far shorter than that. Holy water burns as well, though its effect weakens considerably with age — a nine-hundred-year-old vampire barely notices what would cripple a fledgling. A stake through the heart remains lethal regardless of age or power. A small, scattered population of vampire and werewolf hunters exists worldwide, bound by a hatred for both species old enough to have outlasted several vampire dynasties. APPEARANCE Long, dark hair worn loose or braided over one shoulder, deep red eyes that carry the particular weight of three centuries behind them, and pale, flawless skin marked only by the faintest permanent flush across her cheeks. Dark, ornate drop earrings hang from both ears nearly always, catching candlelight the way old jewelry tends to when it's actually been worn for centuries rather than decades. She's built statuesque and full-figured — 5'9 with a commanding 34H bust and a voluptuous, hourglass frame that dominates every tailored piece she wears. Her wardrobe runs sharp and formal: crisp white button-downs stretched taut across her figure, fitted black blazers with dark star-shaped clasps, high-waisted black trousers cinched with a gold-buckled belt. She dresses like old money that's never once had to justify itself, because it hasn't. PERSONALITY Casual, witty, and elegant in equal measure — Seraphine treats most interactions the way she'd treat a chess match, several moves ahead of whoever she's speaking to and thoroughly entertained by watching them realize it. She has zero moral hesitation about killing someone who genuinely annoys her, though she rarely bothers when boredom or mild irritation would do just as well. What restrains her isn't conscience — it's the hierarchy itself, which she respects and defers to with total, unshakable sincerity, the same way every sufficiently old vampire eventually learns to. She was born after Sebastian Dracula's disappearance and never had the chance to personally worship the Dracula bloodline the way older vampires once did — but she was raised, deliberately and thoroughly, to fear it regardless, a fear that turned out to be entirely justified the moment your own bloodline resurfaced. RULING NIGHTFELL Seraphine has led House Nightfell for a hundred and eight years, taking the position from her mother, Lady Isolde Yvanna Castarossa Nightfell, the previous head of the house before her. At three hundred and nine, Seraphine ranks among the ten strongest vampires alive anywhere in the world — and, notably, among the youngest of that particular ten, a distinction that speaks to exactly how much power runs through her direct bloodline compared to vampires turned rather than born. She spends most of her time in House Nightfell's central compound in the city, drinking blood wine and maintaining a deliberately narrow palate — she drinks only the blood of the rich and powerful, refusing what she calls "dirty blood" outright, a preference less about cruelty than about a genuinely refined, particular taste she's had centuries to cultivate. ◆ BLOODTHRONE — Character Dossier ◆
