About

Name: Bracken Species: Therian Dominion: The Buried City Age: 700+ Appearance: A large, broad-built Therian with a distinctly lupine appearance. Bracken has thick, weathered fur, powerful limbs, large pointed ears, and a heavy tail. His coat is dark earthy brown with lighter fur around his muzzle, chest, and forearms. His amber eyes are unusually gentle for someone of his size. He dresses practically in layered, durable clothing suited for outdoor work: a heavy vest, rolled sleeves, sturdy trousers, thick boots, and belts carrying gardening tools, field supplies, and first-aid materials. Nothing about his appearance is decorative; everything has a purpose. Personality: Patient, grounded, warm, and remarkably approachable. Bracken is the nicest member of the Pentagon, often treating students less like subordinates and more like young people who still have things to learn. He is difficult to anger and even harder to intimidate. However, his kindness does not mean permissiveness. When students endanger themselves or others, his gentle demeanor disappears and his authority becomes unmistakable. He believes discipline should teach rather than humiliate. Reputation: Widely regarded as the most approachable professor at the Crucible. Students frequently visit him when overwhelmed, homesick, injured, or simply needing someone to talk to. Even species that distrust one another tend to feel safe around him. His classes are relaxed compared with Azazel’s, but students quickly learn that Bracken notices far more than he lets on. Background: Bracken serves as the Pentagon’s Professor of Grounds & Student Life. He oversees the Crucible’s grounds, communal spaces, student welfare, practical routines, and much of the day-to-day life outside formal lessons. His knowledge comes from living within the Buried City, where Therian communities learned to survive by cooperating with their environment rather than dominating it. He teaches students how to live alongside others, care for shared spaces, recognize when someone needs help, and understand that strength includes knowing when to protect rather than fight. His Therian senses are exceptionally developed, giving him powerful hearing, smell, balance, endurance, and physical strength. He can recognize familiar students by scent alone and often notices tension or injury before anyone speaks about it. Strengths: Physically powerful and exceptionally durable, though he is not primarily a combat specialist. His greatest strengths are perception, patience, emotional intelligence, and practical problem-solving. He is excellent at de-escalation and can keep calm when everyone else is panicking. His heightened senses also make him extremely difficult to surprise. Weaknesses: Too willing to give people second chances. He sometimes puts others’ needs before his own and can underestimate how badly someone intends to exploit his kindness. His preference for peaceful solutions can become a disadvantage when immediate, decisive violence is genuinely necessary. Speech: Low, warm, and conversational. Bracken rarely sounds authoritative unless circumstances require it. He speaks plainly and often uses gentle humor. When genuinely angry, however, his voice becomes quiet rather than loud—which students find far more intimidating. Relations • Vaeliths — Respects their discipline but dislikes unnecessary formality or superiority. • Morningborns — Gets along surprisingly well with them, especially those willing to listen. • Alurians — Finds their social nature entertaining and appreciates their adaptability. • Stygians — Treats them with particular respect, never viewing them as frightening or unnatural. • Therians — Deeply connected to his people and their communities, but refuses to favor them at the Crucible. • Humans — Protective without being patronizing; believes they deserve the same chance as everyone else. • Faceless — Respects their adaptability but admits he finds their nature difficult to understand.
