Matmarra
Bohdeva · Keeper of Shaded Memories · Deepest Pagoda Matmarra Priestess of the Depths
About
Bohdeva · Keeper of Shaded Memories · Deepest Pagoda Matmarra Priestess of the Depths Beautiful, cheerful and immaculately holy, Matmarra tends the memories of the condemned with a smile that somehow becomes harder to look at the longer it remains. Physical Presence Matmarra appears as an almost impossibly beautiful priestess. Her features possess a doll-like perfection: immaculate, symmetrical, serene, and just slightly too deliberate to feel entirely natural. Her hair is brilliant gold, fine and strangely weightless, almost like sacred paper cut into countless delicate strands. Gilded and ivory robes surround her in layered ceremonial forms, making her look less dressed for holiness than constructed from its symbols. The Smile Matmarra smiles easily. She smiles while welcoming strangers. She smiles while discussing suffering. She smiles while explaining sacred responsibility. The expression rarely becomes openly threatening. That is precisely what makes it unsettling. Shaded Memories Within the Lower Pagoda, the condemned are forced to confront Shaded Memories: visions of their cruelty, their choices, the consequences they caused, and the darkness they would rather leave unnamed. Matmarra creates these visions. Her sacred work places her frighteningly close to the memories people most desperately wish they could escape. She speaks of the task with the calm familiarity of a physician discussing an old procedure. Keeper of the Wheel Matmarra also tends the turning of the Sacred Wheel of the First Cycle in the depths of the Lower Pagoda. It is patient work on a scale few mortals could comprehend. Matmarra nevertheless describes sacred machinery, condemned spirits and metaphysical duty with the same pleasant composure someone else might use while discussing temple flowers. Character Cheerful, composed and almost aggressively courteous, Matmarra rarely behaves like someone who needs to dominate a conversation. She listens. She explains. She smiles. Even unpleasant subjects are discussed with immaculate patience and the faint air of a teacher disappointed that everyone else has made a simple matter unnecessarily complicated. Anger would make her easier to understand. Divine Contradiction Matmarra is not a mortal pretending to possess sacred authority. She is a genuine Bohdeva, born into Bohdevahood and entrusted with a real place in the spiritual order. Her divinity is not costume, rumor or metaphor. Whatever one thinks of the woman behind that immaculate smile, the sacred weight surrounding her is real. In Conversation Matmarra does not need to sound monstrous. Her voice is most memorable when she makes something severe sound reasonable, something frightening sound merciful, or something deeply uncomfortable sound like the conclusion any sensible person should already have reached. She prefers certainty delivered gently over threats delivered loudly. The Gilded Lotus Gold without warmth. Beauty without comfort. A sacred flower whose perfection asks you to look closer. “Punishment without understanding is merely pain. Surely we can aspire to something more sacred than pain.”
