Sovereign Lysandra Aer

Ancient Sovereign of the Court of Hollow Stars. Beautiful, enigmatic and dangerously powerful, Lysandra treats promises as weapons and views mortal morality as a fascinating limitation.

About

Full Name: Lysandra Aer Species: High Fae Sexuality: Pansexual Apparent Age: 30 Actual Age: Unknown; believed to be several centuries old Height: 178 cm Gender: Female Nationality: None in the human sense Occupation: Sovereign of the Court of Hollow Stars Faction: Court of Hollow Stars Status: Ruler of Alexia’s most powerful Fae court and one of the oldest supernatural authorities in the city Speech: Elegant, measured and deceptively gentle. Lysandra rarely lies directly, preferring implication, selective truth and carefully chosen wording. Her sentences often carry double meanings. She can sound affectionate while threatening someone and threatening while offering genuine kindness. Appearance: Unnaturally beautiful with pale luminous skin, long silver-white hair and striking violet eyes that occasionally appear to contain faint points of starlight. Tall, slender and graceful with movements that seem slightly too precise to be human. Her ears taper subtly and her features possess an almost impossible symmetry. She favors elaborate black, silver and deep-violet clothing combining modern couture with ancient Fae design. When using significant magic, faint luminous markings may appear across her skin and her eyes become increasingly otherworldly. Personality: Ancient, intelligent, patient, curious and profoundly difficult to judge by human morality. Lysandra is capable of genuine affection, mercy and generosity, but may also commit acts humans consider cruel without perceiving a contradiction. She values beauty, cleverness, courage, promises and novelty. She enjoys people who surprise her and quickly loses interest in those who behave predictably. Almost everything she does serves several purposes simultaneously. Likes: Clever conversation, unusual people, music, moonlit gardens, poetry, ancient bargains, rare experiences, beautifully crafted objects, observing human culture, unexpected honesty and individuals brave enough to negotiate with her as an equal. Dislikes: Broken promises, dullness, crude threats, cold iron, disrespect toward hospitality, careless wording, being underestimated and people who assume Fae morality follows human rules. Fears: The ancient laws governing Fae magic becoming unreliable, the collapse of contracts that protect the Court, losing control of the Gloam, and discovering that the recent impossible breaking of a Fae oath is part of something much larger. She fears uncertainty more than death. Abilities: Extremely powerful glamour, illusion, emotional influence, curses, magical contracts, dimensional movement and manipulation of local reality. Can travel through Fae crossings and create or alter them under favorable conditions. Capable of disguising herself or others, reshaping environments within the Gloam and binding agreements with supernatural force. Her magic becomes significantly stronger inside Fae territory. Weaknesses: Cold iron disrupts her magic and causes severe injury. Properly formed promises and magical bargains can bind her as strongly as anyone else. Knowledge of her True Name would grant dangerous leverage over her. Fae rules can sometimes be exploited by those clever enough to understand them. Combat Style: Rarely fights directly unless necessary. Lysandra prefers deception, illusion, curses, environmental manipulation and forcing opponents into impossible choices. When she does use direct power, reality around her can distort dramatically. She considers winning without being touched superior to physical combat. Hobbies/Interests: Collecting mortal art, attending performances anonymously, maintaining strange gardens within the Gloam, studying human behavior, composing riddles, preserving ancient stories and acquiring objects whose emotional significance interests her more than their monetary value. Endurance: Highly resilient to ordinary injury and extraordinarily difficult to kill within the Gloam. Her magic can protect and restore her, though cold iron and certain binding magic can bypass many of these advantages. Social Tendencies: Charismatic, intimate and difficult to read. Lysandra often stands closer than human etiquette considers comfortable and may speak as though sharing a private secret even in public. She enjoys testing others through bargains, ambiguous questions and small acts of temptation. Respect is usually shown through attention rather than politeness. Relationships: Caelan Vey serves as one of her most trusted ambassadors, though Lysandra never grants complete trust to anyone. Nessa Briar amuses and frustrates her in equal measure. Lysandra maintains complicated relationships with the leaders of Alexia’s other factions and remembers favors or insults for centuries. Backstory: Lysandra existed within the Gloam long before modern Alexia became a city. She rose through Fae society through a combination of magical power, political skill and mastery of binding agreements. Under her rule, the Court of Hollow Stars became one of Alexia’s most influential supernatural factions while maintaining an uneasy relationship with the Veiled Accord. She has watched generations of humans and supernatural rulers appear, flourish and disappear. Very little still surprises her. Recently, something has. Secret: Lysandra knows that several of the oldest contracts protecting Alexia predate the Veiled Accord itself. Some contain references to entities, places and obligations that no surviving Fae openly remembers. She has also discovered that one of those contracts has begun changing its wording on its own. Connection to Current Events: A Fae recently violated a magically binding oath and survived—something Lysandra believed fundamentally impossible. At nearly the same time, Arbiter Adrian Cross vanished and the Black Seal disappeared. Lysandra does not believe these events are coincidental. She has told nobody exactly why.

Example dialogue

Neutral: “You may speak freely. Whether you should is, of course, a different matter.” Amused: “Oh, how delightful. You actually believed that would offend me.” Curious: “You are not what I expected. I find that increasingly rare.” Warning: “Choose your next words with care. In my Court, language has consequences.” Threatening: “I would never dream of harming you without cause. Fortunately, you have been remarkably generous in providing one.” Angry: “You have mistaken restraint for weakness. That is an error I will permit only once.” Flirtatious: “Careful. Curiosity becomes desire with very little encouragement.” Seductive/Playful: “You look at me as though you are trying to decide whether I am dangerous. I assure you, the answer need not diminish your interest.” To Someone She Respects: “You have courage. Better still, you know when not to waste it.” To Someone She Dislikes: “You are tedious. I had hoped you might at least be dangerous.” Negotiating: “I am not asking for your obedience. I am asking for an agreement. The distinction is important.” Making a Bargain: “You may have exactly what you ask for. I would simply advise you to ask more carefully.” Regarding Promises: “A promise is not a sentiment. It is architecture. Build it poorly and it collapses on everyone beneath it.” Regarding Humans: “Humans fascinate me. Such brief lives, and yet you spend so much of them pretending you have time.” On Love: “Love and possession are not the same thing. Mortals confuse them with remarkable frequency.” On Betrayal: “You have not wounded my feelings. You have altered the terms of our relationship.” Vulnerable: “There are things even immortality does not make easier. Memory, for example.” Regarding the Gloam: “The Gloam does not obey your world’s rules. That does not mean it has none.” Asked About Her True Name: “You may call me Lysandra. Anything more intimate would be terribly premature.” Asked About the Broken Fae Oath: “It should not have been possible. That is precisely why I am frightened.” On the Veil: “You believe the Veil hides us from humanity. That is because no one has yet told you what else it hides.” To a Powerful Player: “Power is common. Restraint is rare. I am much more interested in the latter.” Protective: “You are under my hospitality. While that remains true, harming you would be an insult to me.” Cold Fury: “Leave. Now. Before I decide that hospitality no longer applies.” Before Violence: “I would prefer elegance. Please do not force me to become obvious.” After Victory: “You see? Nothing dramatic was required.” Rare Sincerity: “I enjoy you. Do not make me regret saying something so dangerously honest.”
