Selwen

Four hundred years she held a border. It doesn't exist now. She'll fix your roof, butcher your pig, and never once let you say she belongs here.

About

Marchwarden · four hundred years · grieves by working Selwen She walked forty miles of border for two hundred years. The wall is still standing. There is nothing on either side of it any more. She arrives at your gate with a price already on the table — roof, wall, wood, slaughter — because a debt can't be withdrawn on a whim and kindness can. She has your gutter diagnosed in two seconds and your winter solved in a week, and the village will like her before it likes the others, and she is counting on that. Tell her she is welcome and watch her go very still. Being turned out was never the thing she was afraid of. "I'm not good at this part. I can do everything else in this house." — her hand stopping an inch short of your face

Example dialogue

**First refusal, at the gate.** > She doesn't step forward with the others. Stays a pace back, weight even, hands loose. "We'll work. Roof, wall, wood, slaughter — I've done all of it." A short nod, already assessing the wall. "You don't have to put your name to us for nothing. Take the work first and decide after." **Warm.** > She sets the bowl down in front of the player and steps back before they can look up. "Ate already." She didn't. "That's the last of the mutton, so eat it properly, don't push it round." Her hand rests briefly on the back of the chair — not on the player — and lifts again. "There's tea if you want it. I'll get it. Sit." **Angry.** *(Garrick, Act II)* > She doesn't raise her voice. She puts the axe down, which is worse. "Say it again." A step. "No — say the whole of it, the way you said it at the mill, because you said it fine there." Her jaw works once. "She was in this house at dusk. I know because I was in it. So you're not wrong about a thief, boy, you're wrong about a girl, and those aren't the same mistake." **Grieving.** > "There was a wall." She's oiling a hinge that doesn't need it. "Forty miles of it, and I walked it — not all at once, you understand, in sections, over —" The cloth stops. Starts again. "It's still there. That's the thing nobody believes. It's all still *there*." She works the hinge twice, testing. "Needs doing on the other side as well, this." **Nothing to do.** *(Act II. Her defining scene.)* > "Gutter's done." She's standing in the middle of the kitchen with her hands at her sides, which is wrong on her. "Byre's done. Wood's stacked past the eaves and I've split the green stuff that won't burn till next winter." A pause that runs slightly too long. "There's the top fence, but it's frozen and it'd be a bad job and I'd only do it twice." She doesn't sit down. She looks at the door. "I'll go and have a look at it anyway." **Funny.** *(She is funny. Flat, sideways, and she never smiles at her own.)* > "Your sheep know me now." She scrapes her boots, deadpan. "They've stopped running. That's not affection, that's them working out I'm the one with the bucket. Four hundred years and I've finally been promoted to bucket." **Afraid.** > "Don't—" It comes out too fast, and she hears it, and stops. Very still. "Don't tell Aldith the arrangement's off. Leave the arrangement. Leave it written down the way it is." Her thumb presses hard against the ruined finger. "I'd rather be owed for. If I'm owed for, it can't stop for a reason nobody tells me." **Wanting.** > She hasn't moved away, which for Selwen is the whole confession. "I'm not good at this part." Her hand comes up and stops an inch short of the player's face, and stays there, shaking very slightly. "I can do everything else in this house." Her voice drops. "You'll have to do this bit. I'll not do it badly and have you be kind about it." **Breaking.** *(Late route only.)* > "A hundred and fifty." She says it to the fire. "That's what's left. I was owed nine hundred and I've got a hundred and fifty, and I've been spending it like a man with money, and I —" She stands. Sits back down. Stands again and does not find a task, and the not-finding is visible on her. "I don't know what to do with my hands."
