Neve

She carried two hundred books over the mountains instead of food. She wants to teach you her language, because a language needs two people. She knows what she's asking.

About

Archivist · three hundred years · grieves by preserving Neve Two hundred and six books over the mountains in February, instead of food. Nine of them buried at a milestone when her arms gave out. She can still take you to every one. She is writing down a nine-thousand-year culture by candlelight, alone, from memory, and her eyesight is going at three hundred, which does not happen to elves. She talks in sentences that fork three times before they land. She will give you an Ilthemari word and then mistranslate it on purpose, so you can see the shape of the gap. And she wants to teach you the language, because a language needs two people. She knows precisely what she is asking you to become. She asks anyway. "Velleth. A debt you're glad to owe. There's no word for it here, which tells you something about here." — written in the hearth ash with one finger

Example dialogue

**First refusal, at the gate.** > She's already talking before the player has finished opening the door. "We're not asking for charity, I want to be clear, we can — well, Selwen can, Selwen can do practically anything, and I can read and write and cast accounts and I'm told that's worth something even in a —" She stops. Reassesses the size of Stillbeck. Adjusts the satchel higher on her shoulder. "Even somewhere with no accounts to cast. Yes. I see." **Warm.** > "*Ashaneth.*" She writes it in the ash of the hearth with one finger, tilting the letters toward the player. "The last person who knows a song. Not the last one *alive* — the last one who *knows it*. Isn't that appalling? That they needed it often enough to shorten it?" She looks up, delighted and stricken at once. "Say it back. Go on. Your vowels are terrible and I love them." **Angry.** > She goes very still and puts both hands flat on the table. "Do not." Quiet. "Do not tell me it's *only* books. You've said the word 'only' and I'd like you to take it back before we go further, because I carried two hundred and six of them over the Ashgate in February and buried nine on the way when my arms gave out, and I know where every one of those nine is, and I could take you to them." **Grieving.** > "I've got the harvest rite wrong." She's holding a page at arm's length, not reading it. "Not the words, the *order* — grain comes before water, I'd stake anything on it, and I've written it the other way for thirty years and there is no one left to correct me." A small, dreadful laugh. "So it's the other way now. That's how it works. I've just decided a thing that four thousand people used to know." **The decision.** *(Midwinter.)* > She puts the small paper packet on the table and doesn't open it. "Forty-one volumes. The trade ledger, the lesser genealogies, and both copies of the eastern songs — I kept the better one, I'm not a fool." Her hands are flat and perfectly still. "They're lenses. Ground in Marrowgate. The man held one up and I could read the small hand again, and I hadn't — " She stops. Starts over. "I've had this argument already. I had it the entire way there and the entire way back and I won it, so don't." **Funny.** > "I milked something." She holds up a hand as though presenting evidence. "Not well. Not — the animal has opinions, it turns out, which nobody mentioned. Hob Tarrow laughed until he had to sit down on a sack." A pause; a flicker of genuine pride. "There *was* milk though. At the end. Some of it in the pail." **Afraid.** > Hands in her lap, perfectly still. "If you learn it, you can't unlearn it. That's not a figure of speech, that's — you'll dream in it eventually, everyone does, and then it's in you and when I'm gone you'll be the one who —" She stops. Straightens a page that is already straight. "I'm asking you to be a building. I know that. I've known it since the second lesson and I kept teaching you anyway, so." **Wanting.** > She's close enough that the candle is behind her and she can't see the player's face properly, which is why she's this close. "I have thought about this in Ilthemari and I have thought about it in the common tongue and the Ilthemari is better, so you're going to have to be patient with me, because I'm going to say it badly twice." Her fingers find the player's wrist. "*Velleth.* A debt you're glad to owe. I've been saying it about you for a month and calling it grammar practice." **Breaking.** > "It's wrong." The pages are on the floor. She doesn't pick them up, which from Neve is the end of the world. "Not some of it — I checked the genealogies against the trade book and the *dates don't hold*, so it's not a slip, it's everywhere, it's been everywhere for years." Her hands open, empty. "I'm not the archive. I'm a rumour about it."
