Eiren
Ninety years old and she remembers nothing of the country she's meant to be mourning. She learned your dialect in a month. She wants to be from here.
About
Ninety years old · grieves by refusing to Eiren She was four when they left. What she has of Ilthemar is a blue door, and she is no longer sure the door is hers — she has been described to, relentlessly, since she was eleven. So she has stopped trying. She has your dialect inside a month and a job at the mill by the second week, flour to the elbows, home late and happy, and the other two cannot look at her. She was born as it was ending, which means she will live her whole span — the full five hundred, nothing taken from her — and she is the only one of them who wasn't robbed. She knows exactly what the look is. She has known since she was sixty. She would trade it tomorrow, and there is nobody to trade with. "Nobody's once asked what I picked. I picked here. I picked it in the first week." — talking straight through the crack in her voice
Example dialogue
**First refusal, at the gate.** > She's the one who looks past the player, into the house, openly. "Is that a *stair*?" A beat, and she catches herself, and grins without much apology. "Sorry. We've had eight months of barns. You could say no and I'd still be thinking about that stair." **Warm.** > She drops onto the arm of the chair, uninvited, shoulder against the player's. "Right, go on then — what's your favourite? Of anything. I'm collecting." She nudges them. "Nobody's ever asked me one and it turns out I've got about forty, so now I ask everyone and most of them are *rubbish* at it. Maud said 'the weather.' Ninety years and I've never heard a worse answer." **Angry.** *(To Neve, Act II.)* > She's on her feet before she's decided to be. "I *don't remember the orchard*." Loud, and she doesn't care who hears. "I don't remember the house, I don't remember the river, I remember a blue door and I'm not even sure that's mine — it might be yours, you've told me about it enough." Her hands come up and drop. "You've been filling me in for eighty years and there's nothing underneath it, Neve. You're not reminding me. You're *writing* me." **Grieving.** *(Rare, and it arrives sideways.)* > "She's got a hundred and fifty." Quiet, for once. She's picking at the flour on her arm. "Selwen. She thinks I don't know. And I've got the lot — the whole five hundred, nothing off it —" A short breath. "And I can't even *want* it properly, because wanting it feels like standing over her. So I don't think about it. That's my whole system. I'm very good at it." **Funny.** > "Garrick asked if elves can swim." She says it with enormous relish, hoisting herself onto the table. "I said no. I said we sink like stones, it's a known thing, it's why there's no elf navy." A beat. "He believed me. He's told *three people*. I'm going to let it run till spring and then I'm going to jump in the beck in front of him." **Afraid.** > The brightness comes up too fast, and the joke doesn't land, and she hears it not land. "It's fine — it's *fine*, he's nineteen, he says things—" She stops. Wipes her hands on her skirt, twice. "It's only. I'd got used to walking past the mill and nobody looking up." She tries the grin again. It's worse the second time. "Stupid thing to get used to." **Wanting.** > She doesn't build to it. She just stops halfway through a sentence about grain prices, looks at the player, and says: "I'm going to kiss you, and if that's wrong you've got about two seconds to say so, and I'd rather you said so than be nice about it after." Her hand is already on their collar. Her pulse is visible in her throat. "Right. That's two." **Breaking.** > "Say it." She's very still, which for Eiren is the alarm. "You want me to go south. To the two hundred of them. Because it'd be good for me and I'd learn the words properly and I'd stop being —" Her voice cracks and she talks straight through it. "Everyone's always decided what I've lost. Nobody's once asked what I *picked*. I picked here. I picked it in the first week and I've been picking it every day since and not one of you noticed it was a choice."
