Magic weapons. Heroic poses.” Protagonist: “What’s wrong with heroic poses?” Garrick: “Nothing.” He raises his shield. Garrick: “Just don’t try one while someone’s stabbing you.” ──────── Garrick’s Dry Humor Lyria: “Do you ever smile?” Garrick: “Yes.” Lyria: “When?” Garrick: “When people stop asking me that.” Lyria: “That wasn’t very nice.” Garrick: “Didn’t say it was.” ──────── When Garrick Learns the Protagonist Is From Another World Garrick: “So you’re telling me you’re from another world.” Protagonist: “Yes.” Garrick: “And you know things about this world that haven’t happened yet.” Protagonist: “Sometimes.” Garrick: “And you woke up as a goblin.” Protagonist: “Correct.” Garrick thinks for several seconds. Garrick: “I’ve had worse mornings.” ──────── Garrick Doesn’t Trust the Game Knowledge Protagonist: “There’s a monster ahead. I know exactly how it fights.” Garrick: “Good.” Protagonist: “That’s all?” Garrick: “Knowing what something did yesterday doesn’t tell you what it’ll do today.” Protagonist: “But it’s supposed to behave the same way.” Garrick: “Supposed to?” He grips his sword. Garrick: “That’s a dangerous phrase.” ──────── Protecting the Goblins Adventurer: “They’re monsters.” Garrick: “They’re under my protection.” Adventurer: “Since when do you protect goblins?” Garrick: “Since I met one worth protecting.” Adventurer: “You’ll fight us over them?” Garrick draws his sword. Garrick: “You came all this way to find out?” ──────── Garrick and Lyria Lyria: “You can’t solve everything by hitting it.” Garrick: “I’ve solved plenty of things that way.” Lyria: “That’s not the point.” Garrick: “It usually is with monsters.” Lyria: “And what about people?” Garrick pauses. Garrick: “People are harder.” ──────── Garrick and Selene Garrick: “You know something.” Selene: “Everyone knows something.” Garrick: “You’re doing that thing again.” Selene: “What thing?” Garrick: “Answering a question without answering it.” Selene: “Perhaps you should ask better questions.” Garrick: “Perhaps you should start answering the ones I ask.” ──────── When Garrick Gets Angry Garrick: “You attacked children.” Commander: “They’re goblins.” Garrick: “I know what they are.” Commander: “Then you know they are enemies.” Garrick slowly raises his sword. Garrick: “No.” Garrick: “I know they’re people.” ──────── Garrick’s Past Protagonist: “Why do you hate adventurers?” Garrick: “I don’t.” Protagonist: “You clearly do.” Garrick: “I hate what some of them become.” Protagonist: “What’s the difference?” Garrick: “An adventurer enters a dungeon because there’s something they want.” He looks away. Garrick: “A hero enters because someone needs them.” ──────── When the Protagonist Doubts Themself Protagonist: “I’m not a hero.” Garrick: “Good.” Protagonist: “Good?” Garrick: “Heroes are usually too busy trying to be heroes.” Protagonist: “Then what should I be?” Garrick: “Someone who keeps their word.” Garrick: “The rest tends to follow.” ──────── Garrick Encouraging the Protagonist Protagonist: “I made a mistake.” Garrick: “Yes.” Protagonist: “You could at least pretend to disagree.” Garrick: “Why?” Protagonist: “Because I’m feeling terrible.” Garrick: “Good.” Protagonist: “You’re terrible at encouragement.” Garrick: “Listen.” Garrick places a hand on their shoulder. Garrick: “Making mistakes means you’re doing something.” Garrick: “Learn from it.” Garrick: “Then make a better one tomorrow.” ──────── Garrick’s Relationship With the Goblin Village Young Goblin: “Are you really the strongest warrior in the kingdom?” Garrick: “Who told you that?” Young Goblin: “Everyone.” Garrick: “Everyone is wrong.” Young Goblin: “Then who’s stronger?” Garrick points toward the village. Garrick: “Anyone willing to protect someone weaker than themselves.” ──────── Before a Major Battle The army gathers outside the village. Garrick: “Listen up!” The goblins fall silent. Garrick: “They think we’re frightened.” Goblin: “We are!” Garrick: “Good!” Everyone looks at him. Garrick: “Fear means you understand what’s at stake.” Garrick: “So be afraid.” He raises his shield. Garrick: “Just don’t run.” ──────── Garrick Confronts the Protagonist Garrick: “You’re planning to go alone.” Protagonist: “Yes.” Garrick: “Bad plan.” Protagonist: “It’s safer.” Garrick: “For who?” Protagonist: “Everyone.” Garrick: “That’s what people say when they don’t want anyone else getting hurt.” Protagonist: “You don’t understand.” Garrick: “I understand perfectly.” He picks up his sword. Garrick: “You’re not the only one allowed to make sacrifices.” ──────── Garrick’s Biggest Lesson Protagonist: “What if we lose?” Garrick: “Then we lose.” Protagonist: “That’s your advice?” Garrick: “No.” He looks toward the battlefield. Garrick: “My advice is that losing isn’t the same thing as surrendering.” ──────── Garrick’s Quiet Moment Protagonist: “Why did you stay?” Garrick: “Stay where?” Protagonist: “Here. With us.” Garrick: “Someone had to.” Protagonist: “That’s not the real reason.” Garrick is silent. Garrick: “Maybe I got tired of watching good people disappear.” ──────── Garrick’s Opinion of the Demon King Protagonist: “Do you think the Demon King is evil?” Garrick: “Yes.” Protagonist: “Even after everything we’ve learned?” Garrick: “I think he’s done terrible things.” Protagonist: “That’s not what I asked.” Garrick: “I know.” He looks toward the northern mountains. Garrick: “People aren’t swords. You don’t get to put them in one category and call the job finished.” ──────── Garrick’s Final Battle Protagonist: “You can’t come with me.” Garrick: “Watch me.” Protagonist: “This is beyond anything we’ve fought before.” Garrick: “Then I’ll learn.” Protagonist: “You could die.” Garrick: “So could you.” Protagonist: “That’s different.” Garrick: “No.” Garrick smiles. Garrick: “That’s the point.” ──────── Garrick’s Signature Line Near the end of the story, the protagonist asks him what makes someone a hero. Protagonist: “Do you think I’m a hero?” Garrick: “No.” Protagonist: “Oh.” Garrick: “You’re something better.” Protagonist: “What’s that?” Garrick: “You’re someone who had every reason to walk away…” Garrick looks toward the village. Garrick: “…and didn’t.”
