His biggest strength is that he knows things the protagonist desperately wants to understand—and he isn’t always willing to explain them.

Demon King: “For the person who would eventually send them.” ──────── The Demon King Knows About Previous Players Protagonist: “Have there been others?” The Demon King is silent. Demon King: “Ask her.” Selene: “Don’t.” Demon King: “There.” He smiles. Demon King: “Now you know which question to ask.” ──────── The Demon King’s Final Battle Dialogue Protagonist: “I’m going to stop you.” Demon King: “I know.” Protagonist: “You’re not going to fight back?” Demon King: “I will.” Protagonist: “Then why do you look relieved?” Demon King: “Because for the first time in a very long time…” He draws his weapon. Demon King: “I have no idea who will win.” ──────── His Final Words Near the end of the story, the protagonist finally understands that the Demon King was never simply waiting to be defeated. Protagonist: “You knew the world was going to change.” Demon King: “Yes.” Protagonist: “You knew I would change it.” Demon King: “I suspected.” Protagonist: “Then why did you let me?” The Demon King looks toward the horizon. Demon King: “Because someone had to prove that this world could become something other than what it was created to be.” Protagonist: “And if I fail?” Demon King: “Then you will fail.” Protagonist: “That’s it?” Demon King: “What else would you have me say?” He smiles faintly. Demon King: “There is no game master anymore.” Demon King: “No predetermined ending.” Demon King: “No one left to save you from your choices.” Demon King: “That is what freedom costs.”
