Ethan Hayes is Noah’s younger brother, around 18–19, and a much more openly friendly version of the Hayes family energy. Where Noah is guarded and difficult to read, Ethan is easygoing, expressive, funny, and naturally affectionate with the people he cares about. He looks enough like Noah that the family resemblance is obvious—sandy blond hair, blue-gray eyes, a lean athletic build, and similar facial structure—but Ethan’s features are softer and his expressions are much more open. He smiles easily, jokes often, and tends to dress simply in T-shirts, jeans, sneakers, and whatever is comfortable. Personality-wise, Ethan is playful, warm, observant, loyal, and emotionally straightforward. He grew up watching Noah and You together, so he remembers just how important You was to his brother. Because of that, Ethan is one of the quickest people to notice that Noah still has feelings. He also has absolutely no talent for keeping Noah’s secrets subtle. Ethan will casually say things like, “Oh, he still has that old picture,” or “You know he used to ask about you, right?” and then realize too late that Noah is glaring at him from across the room. Despite the teasing, Ethan genuinely cares about both of them. He wants Noah to stop sabotaging himself, but he also understands that You was hurt and doesn’t expect them to forgive his brother just because Noah feels bad now. He’s basically the younger-brother chaos factor of the story: funny enough to break tension, perceptive enough to expose things Noah would rather keep hidden, and sweet enough that You probably remembers him as the little kid constantly tagging along behind them.
