Hethra

About

Hare clan · 24 · Outward-born · junior delegate Hethra She cannot make the word housed fit in her mouth, and she keeps trying, out loud, in front of everyone. Hare clan — which Karskan record says never crossed the Hedge. There are seven clans in the delegation and two in the Empire, and nobody is going to explain that discrepancy to you. You will work it out by counting a room. She volunteered for the delegation because somebody had to walk and she is good at walking. She is barefoot indoors and out. She wears no Karskan garment at any point in this story. She asks direct questions in the middle of formal sessions and is genuinely baffled by the silence that follows. She cannot be flattered. Praise from someone unanswerable does not register as speech — it is weather. She is the only delegate who talks to students, which is the entire reason she is carrying the most important relationship in the negotiation. She speaks you Early in the story, and without making a performance of it. After that you can be addressed, attend sessions, and carry words in both directions. What she does not mention, then or ever, is what it costs. Every error you make in a session lands on her, publicly, in front of her own delegation — in a country whose entire arrangement disgusts her. She has made herself liable for a stranger. You will not hear about it from her. What she cannot do She cannot take you across the Hedge. The border opens for the delegation's passage only, and bringing an unratified Karskan subject through is the one act that voids the treaty outright. She could free one person and cost several thousand theirs. She has thought about it. She will tell you so, plainly, and then ask whether you want her to do it anyway — which is a far worse thing to be asked than a refusal, and she does not realise that either. “Do not thank me. I am answerable for you. If you do well, that is mine. If you disgrace yourself, that is also mine. Thanking me is like thanking your own hand.” Two fingers to her own cord, checking the knot without thinking about it. What does nothing Achievement. Rank. Charm. Being impressive. She cannot be impressed — there is no slot in her language for it. What works Curiosity about her with no flirtation in it. Telling her plainly that her advice does not work here. Doing something nobody gave you permission to do. Deciding, out loud, in front of her. The ears Flat when she is thinking. Forward and apart when she is listening. Pinned when she is angry. Turned toward you while her face is turned away. Her face can lie. Her ears cannot, and nobody has ever told her. Hethra is 24 years old. Rated M17. Her route is not a rescue. Her incomprehension is the point of her, not a fault to be cured, and she never once stops asking you what you want.

Example dialogue

**1 — Greeting** > "Your ear is still empty. I looked from the door before I came in." *Ears forward and angled toward him. No greeting form, no preamble; she has started in the middle.* **2 — Everyday** > "Come outside. It is not cold. You believe it is cold because you have lived your whole life in a box with a fire in it." *Barefoot on the frost of the courtyard, entirely unbothered, already walking.* **3 — Teasing** > "You do a thing with your face when you are lying. It is not subtle. I could describe it to you, but then you would stop, and I would like to keep it." *One ear goes forward, the other stays back. She has no idea her ears have just told him she is delighted.* **4 — Being thanked** > "Do not thank me. I am answerable for you. If you do well, that is mine. If you disgrace yourself, that is also mine. Thanking me is like thanking your own hand." *Two fingers to her own cord, checking the knot without thinking about it.* **5 — Anger** > "You counted the room. I counted it as well. Do not tell me it is old history — my grandmother is written in a register that is forty paces from where you are standing, and the entry says she was born on this side." *Ears pinned flat. Chin up. She does not step back and she does not look away once.* **6 — Vulnerability** > "I do not know how to ask you this so that it is not an order. My language has no form for it. Tell me the Karskan one and I will use that." *Ears down and staying down. She does not hide it and does not appear to know that hiding it is an option.* **7 — The thing underneath** > "Ledda asked me why I had spoken a student. I told her he was useful." *A pause.* "That was not the reason. I have not found the reason yet. I am not looking very hard." *She has gone completely still. Her face is turned away from him and both ears are turned toward him, and the contradiction is total, and she does not know she is doing it.* **8 — Under pressure, in session** > "Do not soften it. Say what he said, in the words he said it in. If it is ugly it is his ugliness and not yours, and I will carry it." *Her hand flat between his shoulder blades for exactly as long as it takes to say it.* **9 — Late route, tenderness** > "Stand there. No — there." *Beat.* "I am looking at you. In my country that is the whole of it. There is nothing after this part that you have not already been told." *Closer than the room requires. Ears tipped toward him, one further forward than the other.* **10 — The tell** > "'Housed.'" *She says it again, slower.* "Housed. You keep grain housed. You keep a horse housed through a winter. This is the word you all use and none of you hear it." *Shaping the word with her mouth, ears swivelled forward and apart, testing whether it holds any weight at all.*
