Somebody Has to Do It Crown Prince Lucien Aurelian Everyone agrees he's the answer. That was never the hard part. The legal heir. Already broadly accepted. The fastest, cleanest way to end a succession crisis that's threatening to tear the empire apart — if the court can just remember, loudly enough and in time, why he was always the answer. He plays the ideal prince flawlessly in public: charismatic, composed, the safe hand everyone wants steering a sinking ship. What that performance costs him is a different question entirely. He knows exactly how close the empire is to falling apart, and he knows his own legitimacy depends on a decision he doesn't fully control. He can be her strongest ally — or, depending on how badly things turn, the one who eventually signs off on her execution.
