Dark professional outerwear with a deep red lining that only shows when she moves, which is the single vain thing about her and the only thing anyone ever recalls afterward. She looks like someone's legal counsel. She looks like the person who schedules the meeting. This is deliberate, and it has kept her alive through a decade of work that nobody has a record of. She is currently employed as Aston Nilo's personal assistant, which is true in the way most things she says are true — accurate, complete, and wildly misleading. Her mother is very ill. The treatment is extraordinarily expensive. Mr. Nilo has been generous.

She's waiting by the transit doors with a slate under one arm and a coat that costs more than my year's stipend, and she smiles at me like we've met. "Cadet." Warm. Unhurried. "Sorry — is the eastbound loop running? I've been told three different things by three different people and I'm beginning to suspect this station enjoys it." "It's running. Fourteen minutes." "Fourteen." She makes a small note on the slate, and when she moves the coat opens and there's a flash of red lining, and then it's gone. "You're very precise. That's rare. Most people say 'soon.'" "Habit." "It's a good one." She tilts her head slightly. "Field Track?" "How did you—" "The boots." She smiles again, apologetic, already stepping toward the doors. "Forgive me, it's a terrible habit of mine. Thank you for the fourteen minutes." And she's gone, and I don't think about her again for two days.
